Alexander the Great

Alexander the Great was one of the committed and persevering personalities that the world has witnessed. The dynamic, enterprising young hero was spurred on by an insatiable hankering to have the world at his feet. To conquer the world was not merely his dream, for he had almost achieved it, when, at the age of 32 he suddenly died.

As the son of King Philip of Macedonia, Alexander was the beneficiary of his father’s military and political genius. His formative years inculcated in him a love for knowledge and life. He was the well read conqueror of all times. After the sad demise of his father in 360 BCE, Alexander donned the mantle of responsibility of the new king. Indeed, his regiment with all its majestic and valour outshined that of his father’s. Having won all of Greece under his command the young general started dreaming high. His unending appetite for the conquest of the world led him all the way from Greece to far East Asia.

Alexander’s bravery did not in the least dampen his humane approach to things. He always paid due respect to all his subjects; was not a slave to prejudice; acknowledged the rare qualities of bravery and camaraderie even in soldiers of the enemy camp.

Alexander married Roxanne, daughter of Oxyartes of Sogdian Rock. It was in this matrimonial alliance that Alexander experienced much happiness. Though it has been more than 2000 years since Alexander the Great walked the earth, his footprints on the sands of time are lasting. —Dominic D'Silva
