Why was Israel Created? At the end of World War II, the demands for a Jewish state in Palestine grew. In 1947, the United Nations took over responsibility for Palestine, dividing it into an Arab state and a Jewish state. The Jews agreed to this plan, but the Arabs did not. The state of Israel came into being on May 14, 1948. It was immediately attacked by the Arab armies from Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Transjordan—known collectively as the Arab Leage. By 1949, Israel had defeated the Arab league and added the land to its own territory.

Why is the Sphinx such a Mystery? Religion played an important part in Egyptian life. The Egyptians believed in many gods and goddesses. Gods looked after every aspect of life. Every town and city had its own god, too. Temples were dedicated to a particular god or a dead Pharaoh. Pyramids are the oldest stone structures in the world. They were built as tombs, to keep the body of the dead king safe for eternity and perhaps to ease his passage to the heaven. The Great Sphinx is a mysterious rock sculpture with a human head on the body of a lion. This was built near the pyramids, outside modern Cairo. Historians believe it is older than the pyramids themselves.

Why do we Cry when Peeling Onions? Onions send out an irritating substance when we peel them. Onion has an oil containing sulphur which not only gives it its sharp odour, but it also irritates the eye. The eye reacts by blinking and producing tears to wash it away. That is why we cry when we peel onions.
