2001 in Review - Part 1. Federations

UWF:

Owner: Hoke Smart

Key Players: Pegasus Warrior, Shane Douglas, Ethan Tyler, Liger, Dino Delsante, Arthryn, Logan Carter

Paul Steakhouse: The UWF wasn't much of a force this year, as it closed in early January. Its best moments, such as the Liger/Delsante and TBL/Arthryn fueds, as well as the Elite tv angle, had all taken place in the year 2000. Zero impact in 2001. Grade: D

E-Wrestling Mark: I think it had quite an impact. Though their product in 2001 was far from being VERY good, it left some bad blood in the air to be settled in different federations as we saw in the year 2001. I think Pegasus Warrior proved his great ability in the middle of poor angles and bad business decisions. However, if it wasn't for UWF, maybe the feds in 2001 wouldn't even have opened. Grade: C

DOA Pro:

Owner: Nick Diamante and Vince DiNardo

Key Players: Arthryn and Lorenzo Hayes

Paul Steakhouse: Not exactly a memorable run for DOA Pro this year either. Poor management and a lack of talent really did this fed in. Nick Diamante handing over ownership to Vince DiNardo pretty much put the final nail in the coffin of a fed that other than the start of the multi fed fued between Lorenzo Hayes and Arthryn, left no markGrade: D

E-Wrestling Mark: Trying to live up to its former run, DOA Pro opened up under Nick Diamante's ownership. After a while, Diamante ran out of gas. He left the DOA Pro to Vince DiNardo, close friend of his. This change, in my opinion, left a bad taste in the fans' mouth who for the most part couldn't get into DOA's product. However, it gave both Arthryn and Lorenzo Hayes a chance to become well...someone. Grade: C

IYFW:

Owner:: Tim Cryderman

Key Players: Nick Diamante, TBL, Legacy, Cody Covington, The Dark Angel, Dan Klitz, and Ethan Tyler

Paul Steakhouse: In Your Face Wrestling should have been the next big thing. It had a great talent roster that was active, interesting angle, and very good cards. Results went up on time, and everything was running pretty smoothly. Unfortunately, by giving Ethan Tyler the world title the second he joined the fed, President Cryderman killed the whole thing in one fellow swoop. Even so, I won't flame him too badly for it, as IYFW was still the 3rd best fed of the year. Grade: B

E-Wrestling Mark: I must admit, I didn't get to see too much of IYFW's product. However, names like Legacy and The Dark Angel showed true talent as they were featured as top starts among names like Ethan Tyler, Nick Diamante and TBL. Very good fed, and when the president had it in him, it was a great thing. Too bad it didn't last too long. I agree with Paul, it's failure had a lot to do with giving the title to Ethan Tyler. I don't mean to knock on Tyler, he's a great wrestler. But it was a bad business decision. Grade: B

GWA:

Owner: Jesse McConnell

Key Players: TBL, Chandler, Hayabusa, The Phantom Kid

Paul Steakhouse: Let's face it, this fed had nothing. A few big names, but I can't think of one card that had even anything remotely special on it. Not only that, but it lacked leadership in the front office. A filler fed, and a complete flop. Grade: F

E-Wrestling Mark: GWA. That's a fed I know nothing about. I heard the rumble when Chandler joined, but that's about it. Since I dont know what this fed was about, and I'm being brutally honest, I can't grade it on their product's worth. So, again since I didn't hear of it, I'll give it a C just for shits and giggles. Grade: C

HIW:

Owner: Dave Fenichel

Key Players: Joey Fury, Serial Thrylla, Arthryn, Lorenzo Hayes, Nomad, Scott Hunter, Chandler, Liger, Dan Klitz

Paul Steakhouse: The best fed of the year, barnone. It had the best talent, the best roleplaying, the best angles, and the best cards. Week after week, it went head to head with the EWA, and kicked it's ass. It gave Serial Thrylla, Nomad, and Chandler their last legitimate runs at glory, but more importantly, paved the way for the new stars, the future of e-wrestling, guys like Joey Fury, Arthryn, Lorenzo Hayes, and Scott Hunter. It also provided quite possibly the fued and match of the year in Liger vs Dan Klitz. It was competitive from top to bottom, and there wasn't a single card that wasn't top notch. HIW was dropped suddenly and without warning, while it was still putting out top notch material. As close to flawless as you are going to get.Grade: A

E-Wrestling Mark: Please. Take a look at the list of key players. With such a roster, HIW should've been the best wrestling federation ever. Liger and Dan Klitz did an outstanding job for the hardcore title. Both men gave that piece of gold more meaning than the Heavyweight title ever had. Arthryn and Lorenzo Hayes were having very good segments as well. Joey Fury, amazed many with his talent, though he was the target of controversy. President Fenichel was doing great. Then, the inevitable in our so-called "circle" happened. Trouble in paradise. Fenichel announced he was closing HIW. This meant Joey Fury wouldn't get his long-awaited shot at the big time. This meant Arthryn and Hayes wouldn't get to finish their work. Of course, seeing that EWA was re-opening, Fenichel re-opened. Of course, people like Chandler, Nomad and Serial Thrylla left for EWA. In an attempt to help Joey Fury in the process, the president put Fury over all 3 men. BAD Business decision. This sent HIW down the drain, in my opinion. However, for the time it was open, it was VERY solid. Grade: A-

FWL:

Owner: Dave Robinson

Key Players: Kenji Ryoko, Danger Rick and Corey Simmons

Paul Steakhouse: A unique concept that was actually followed through on. FWL was run like a true indy fed. While not particularly talented, they made due with what they had, and for that, FWL gets my respect. Grade: C

E-Wrestling Mark: I liked it. It was a new concept, even though it wasn't on the national-type deal. Kenji Ryoko carried that fed on his shoulders basically. Mr. Robinson just couldn't get it done the way it was supposed to be. He has a great mind for this business, it just wasn't the right time. Grade: C+

EIWA:

Owners: Alex Garner, Brian McDougall and Chris Graham

Key Players: Shawn Carter, Dino Delsante, Mike Barnes, Shane Matthews, OX, Arthryn, Anton Bailey, JT $weet.

Paul Steakhouse: I liked EIWA. We had ownership that had very little pull in this circle, and therefore couldn't reel in the big names like other feds could. They instead took smaller, lesser names, and gave them the chance to shine, which they did. Considering all the people in charge were presidents for the first time, they did a decent job with EIWA, and made it reasonably enjoyable to watch. Grade: B-

E-Wrestling Mark: EIWA could never really get off the ground. It had a solid administration, but they couldn't get to organize themselves very well. However, it did gave a chance for new names to start off in our side of the wrestling world. Names like Matthews, Barnes and Shawn Carter surprised people with their dedication. People like Ox and Bailey showed their talent to the world. All in all, it was a good set of wrestlers with a good administration, or pulling to different places. Grade: C+

EWA:

Owner: Tom Stone

Key Players: Ethan Tyler, Holden Raines, Tiki Tortez, Arthryn, Eric Walther, Nomad, Nick Diamante, Deuce, and Vinny D.

Paul Steakhouse: Even though this has been an off year for the EWA, it has still managed to be the second best fed of the year product wise, and the best fed of the year when it comes to longevity. The EWA's strength this year was consistent cards and activity and involvement from their wrestlers, mostly the out of character stuff that is so important in making a great fed. Its actual product on the other hand, while not being terrible wasn't exactly strong. There hasn't been an angle revolving around the world title since Chandler's American Pride Angle, and lots of other angles that appeared to have potential fizzled out. All in all though, EWA's worst is still much better than most federation's best. Grade: A-

E-Wrestling Mark: Since it opened in late august, EWA has been running strong. Yeah, some may claim I am biased but the fact remains: It has been alive for a longer period of time than any other fed. Many have come and gone. EWA has prevailed. With Tyler holding the belt for a long period of time after Chandler's performance as world champ again, it was truly the fed to be. And even though many criticize it for their ways...scratch that, for Stone's way, it has given us very good feuds for the ages.Further more, it's no longer about names like Chandler, Thrylla or even Diamante. They are gone. People like Holden Raines, Vinny D and Tortez, and up-n-comers Eric Walther and Sakyo Kyuma, EWA has no plans of closing down for the time being. Grade: A+

SDW:

Owner: Hoke Smart and Jesse McConnel

Key Players: Liger, Dan Klitz, Ghosthand, Legacy, Joey Fury

Paul Steakhouse: Even SDW hasn't had the chance to show us what they can do yet, holding only 3 house shows in 2001. They are a federation with a ton of talent, but shaky management. If they can survive the crucial early period, I can see SDW challenging EWA for supremacy in this circle for 2002. Until
then, SDW is just one of the many. Grade: C

E-Wrestling Mark: They started out with a very nice concept in the house shows format. However, their product was not as good as you'd expect for a starting federation. However, with incoming talent, and their current roster, they seem to be getting in the best shape to give some good ol' competition to EWA. They should have the talent by the end of the first quarter of 2002. In the meantime, work with the product of your current roster. Oh yes, an extremely dedicated president makes me truly believe in this federation's success. Grade: B-
