2001 in Review - Part 2. The Wrestlers

Welcome to Part 2 of Inside E-Wrestling's 5 part series on the year in review. In part 1, we went through the federations that came around during 2001, and gave our thoughts on them as a whole. In this part, we present you with our wrestling report card for 2001. We have profiled every wrestler that made some sort of an impact during the year 2001, gave our thoughts on their year, and graded their performance. Here goes nothing:

Anton Bailey: Not the first name that comes to mind when our circle is brought up, but he had a pretty solid year, wrestling in GWA, DOA, and most importantly, the EWA, where he had a decent run with the Extreme Title. Grade: C

Arthryn: Believe it or not, our Puerto Rican friend managed to have one of the best years of any wrestler in our circle. He started off the year by main eventing his first PPV in the UWF against the Pegasus Warrior. He then moved on to DOA-Pro, where he began his notorious feud with Lorenzo Hayes, which carried over into HIW and became one of the hottest angles around. To cap it off, he appears to be on the brink of his first legitimate main event run in the EWA. Definitely the best year of his career thus far. Grade: A

Carson Walker: Not a bad year for Walker. He showed signs of promise in the HIW, where he worked a very strong program with Pete Boyar and Shawn Carter. He's one of the up and coming stars of the circle, and I expect bigger things out of him in 2002. Grade: C

Chandler: People are going to look at Chandler's performance in the EWA and say that he had a horrible year, and that he disappointed many who look at him and his legendary status, but I say that this is not the case. His EWA run might not be the most memorable thing in the world, but Chandler was a strong force in the GWA, even becoming world champion. He also performed well in HIW before he left, and might be the one driving force behind Joey Fury's rise to prominence. Grade: B

Cody Covington: Not the best year for c4. He had a decent run in IYFW before it closed, but since then has pretty much floated around, not really accomplishing anything anywhere that he went. He did become the International champion in EWA this year, but pretty much disappeared from the scene soon after. Not a horrible year, but nothing to write home about. Grade: C

Corey Simmons: Became the FWL world champion as a big fish in a small pond. Other than that, he's currently one half of a scrub tag team getting beat in handicap matches in SDW. Grade: D

Dan Klitz: What can you say about Dan Klitz? His hardcore title reign in HIW was phenomenal, and had some of the best matches of the year while defending the belt. He had quite possibly the feud and match of the year with Liger, but that's a discussion to be saved for another part of the column. He also had a great run in IYFW, rivaling Nick Diamante for the world title, and making for some interesting television. Awesome year for Dan Klitz. Grade: A+

Danger Rick: See Corey Simmons. Grade: D

Deuce: Deuce was involved in one of the biggest angles of the year, being under the La Parka mask. Many people were confused and disappointed when it turned out to be him, but we at Inside E-Wrestling feel that he's done a great job with it, and has been one of the most entertaining people in the EWA's run this year. One of the more underrated men around. Grade: B

Dino Delsante: He was still a small force towards the end of UWF at the beginning of the year, wrestled well in EIWA, and is finally making breakthroughs in the EWA, winning the television championship several weeks ago. Not a bad year for the Cornerstone. Grade: B

Divine: He might have won the EWA North American Title, but something tells me that it's be default. The queer merchant's work just doesn't cut it, plain and simple. Grade: D

Eric Walther: Quite possibly the rookie of the year, his work has been nothing short of awesome. I wouldn't be surprised to see him become EWA world champion in 2002, and the only thing that stops him from receiving an A here is that he wasn't active for the first 8 months of the year. Grade: B+

Ethan Tyler: As always, he was one of the most controversial men in the circle, but he also got the job done in the ring as well. He was a UWF world champion, unfortunately an IYFW world champion, and even a HIW world champion, if you want to call it that. Most of all though, he held the EWA world championship this year, and is looked upon as being responsible for the "changing of the guard" in the EWA. A great year for Ethan Tyler. Grade: A

El Gigante: A nice effort in GWA, as well as EWA, where he held the North American Title for a decent amount of time before fading out of the picture. About as good of a year as can be expected from him. Grade: C

Hayabusa: One of the most overrated men in our circle, he pretty much comes and goes without accomplishing much. Luckily for us, the only thing he did this year was get built up as a mystery man for GWA, only to completely disappoint. Grade: D

Holden Raines: The current EWA world champion. He's obviously performed great, but like Eric Walther, his lack of activity during the first half of the year prevents him from receiving an A. Grade: B+

Howell: He's not talented enough to be nearly as unreliable he is. If you want a good picture of how his year went, go look inside your toilet bowl after you've taken a dump. Grade: F

Joey Fury: One of the most talked about wrestlers this year, an obvious up and coming star. However, he might have been pushed too far too fast in HIW, as he wasn't all that well received by his peers. He also hasn't been all that active since HIW, but still, this year was a big step up for his career. Grade: B

Johnny Hardcore: A great feud and subsequent match with Ethan Tyler, but other than that, not the most memorable year for him. Grade: C

Ken Doe: He has had a very good run in EWA this year, winning the Extreme and North American, and Tag Titles, as well as forming his own group of followers, The Order. Not bad for a man no one had even heard of before 2001. Grade: B

Kenjo Ryoko: See Corey Simmons and Danger Rick. Grade: D

Legacy: An undeniable talent, but hasn't really been given the chance to show what he can do at a high level here yet. He looked like he was in the midst of a big push before IYFW closed, and now he looks like he could be one of the major players for SDW in 2002. Grade: C

Liger: A good year for the man many consider to be the best this circle has ever had. His feud and matches with Dan Klitz in HIW are memorable, and his change to more of an edgier, hardcore style was definitely needed. He's had better years as a whole, but he's still Liger, and what's not quite his best is still better than anything most people can do. Grade: A-

Lorenzo Hayes: He had a great feud with Arthryn in both DOA-Pro and HIW, but unfortunately disappeared when HIW closed. It's a shame, because he was just about to become the next big thing too. Grade: B+

Nick Diamante: An awesome year for the Diamond Stud, even though he got shafted in his quest to become world champion, and retired because of it. He participated in one of the best angles of the year, and his work in IYFW and EWA make him a candidate for not only wrestler of the year, but both heel and face of the year as well. That's an impressive accomplishment for the Diamond Stud. Grade: A+

Nomad: Nomad might be overlooked this year, but he was a contender for the world title in HIW, and has had a solid run as International Champion in EWA. His impending feud with Eric Walthier could be talked about this time next year as one of the best. Grade: B+

OX: He wrestled well in EIWA, as well as HIW, where he became a force in the daunted hardcore division. Nothing outstanding, but solid nonetheless. Grade: C

Pete Boyar: The Gunner peaked this year. Not the most talented wrestler, but his effort makes up for it. He had a nice 3 way fued with Shawn Carter and Carson Walker, and if given the chance, makes a great midcard addition to any roster. Grade: C

The Phantom Kid: He only wrestled in the GWA this year, and that says it all in a nutshell. Grade: D

Roman Tate: He showed some signs of promise in HIW, but hasn't been seen since. Lots of talent, not much initiative. Grade: C

Sakyo "Genjutsushi" Kyuma: Another candidate for rookie of the year, he has burst onto the scene in EWA, and won both the Television and Extreme titles. The future looks bright for him. Grade: B-

Scott Hunter: He wrestled extremely well in HIW, and was just about to break through with something huge when it closed. He now looks to have earned a main event slot in EWA, but only time will tell. Not quite as memorable of a year as 2000, but how could it be? After all, there wasn't a Battlebowl tournament for him to win. Grade: B+

Serial Thrylla: A terrible run in EWA, but being the first ever world champion of HIW still gets you somewhere. However, the real highlight of his year was meeting up with the immortal Dave Fenichel in New Hampshire, and schooling Diesel and the nerd in 2 on 2 basketball. Grade: B-

Shane Matthews: He was one of the many "lesser" names than made the upper card of EIWA fun to watch, and now has found himself a good position in SDW. He's got talent, but what he can do with it remains to be seen. Grade: C

Shawn Carter: Burst onto the scene winning the EIWA world title, then went on to wrestle well in both the EWA and HIW. He hasn't been seen in the last few months, or else his grade might be a lot better. Grade: B-

Shawn Samson: A couple of funny comedy bits in HIW, but other than that, not much to speak of. Grade: D

TBL: He looked to be in the midst of his best work in years in IYFW before it closed, but then had less than memorable runs in GWA and EWA. His best years are behind him, but he's still the loveable Jew of the circle. Grade: C

The Regulators: If someone had told me that the best tag team in our circle's history would have had the worst, most pathetic year out of anyone in 2001, I would have laughed in their face. Unfortunately, that's what happened. Their EWA run was nothing short of pathetic, and even though Biggie is still the man, they're definitely getting deuced here. Grade: F

Leon Sharpe: Another wrestler that is often overlooked, but he has had a very good year in both the EWA and in HIW. He might not have much to show for it, but his effort was great, and it probably won't go unnoticed for much longer. Grade: B

"Tricky" Tiki Tortez: Kind of a disappointment if you ask me. A complete flop everywhere until he was given a big main event push in the EWA, where he quickly became unreliable. Not his best year. Grade: C

Vince DiNardo: A peak year for him, as he finally has done something to break away from under Diamante's shadow. He's still a long ways away from being a main eventer, but his angle work with Deuce has been top notch thus far, and I hope that it continues in 2002. Grade: B

That's it for Part 2. As you can see, some wrestlers had the years you'd expect them to, some wrestlers were pleasant surprises, and others just fell flat on their ass. Make sure you check out Part 3 of our 4 part series on the year in review, The Awards.
