I sometimes think I'm too helpful. I returned for a third day to visit the old ladies. I couldn't let them finish the repairs alone. They were old and there husbands had past and their kids moved on. I finished fairly quickly and they were greatful. I had other work to get down, and I couldn't stay there all day. I had to deal with some thugs. I went to one of the houses that they were suppose to be at. There was no one there that I could find. I proceeded to the next one. I found two men standing in front of the house. I wouldn't call myself a man of subtly, and I thus approached the front door. "I'm looking for Brick, do you know where he is?" As soon as word Brick was mentioned, the man on the left took off running. It caught me by surprise. I had to chase after him. I ran down allys and passage ways. It was hard to follow as he knew the terrain and I relied on instinct. He steadily gain ground on me until he turned on corner and vanished completely. I kept chasing in the most likely direction but quickly I had to give up. I had no choice but to return to that house. I returned to find no one there at all. I went inside. There was a lock, but it certainly wasn't build to withhold a good push, with on hand even. The place was completely empty. Not a clue to be found anywhere. It must have been a decoy, one would run and the other would clean up any traces in a hurry. I knew they had several hideouts and it was not likely to assume they would return to this one so soon. I must move on. I found another hang out. I stopped to study the place before I entered. I did notice one thing. One of the guys from earlier guarding the house, he was walking down the street. He was heading toward the building, possibly to warn them. I Just happen to be hidden in Just the right spot. To him, the events must have played out like this. I was walking down the street ready to inform my companions. I saw a hand come out of nowhere. It grabbed my sleeve and dragged me into the narrow passage between two houses. My weapons were ripped away Just before I could reach for them and as I was about to yell for help I felt cold steel against my neck. I wanted to struggle, but the slightest move and I would have my neck slit. "I am still looking for Brick, have you seen him?" "I don't know what your...arrrghhhh." "I know that hurt. Now stop playing dumb with me, and I'll let you live." I cut only the top of his shoulder, barely into the muscles. Its not enough to make him bleed much, but a good display of his helplessness. "Ok, I know him, but I haven't seen him in a few days." "Where is he now?" "He doesn't let anyone know where he lives, I know he is going to a meeting tomorrow night." "And give you chance to warn them?" "I promise I won't, Just let me live. I don't get paid enough for this." "How much?" "Four drakers and a half peice a week." "I have a building to guard, Seven drakers. Its very quiet place. Its only valid if I live through an attack on Brick." "Its a deal, now I need to talk to them before they know whats going on." "I hope I can trust you." I let him go and threw his sword at his feet. He bandaged up his wound as best he could and he told me of the meeting and the best way to interfere. He walked off and told them he was attacked by an unknown warrior on the street. It was mostly true, Just not the whole story. I might be able to trust him after all. I hope that I will get the bounty on Brick or I won't be able to pay him at all. I went back to the Midnight Moon and had yet another uneventful day protecting a bar that needed no protection. I much expected grander missions and a more meaningful adventure. I had assumed I would have caught up with my father by now. I need to make money now before I can do anything. I need only a few more missions and maybe I can continue my search. |
