These Wings I Had To Bear

I wore these wings, they were a sign
to hold a truth, to clear my mind
I wore these wings, so I'd be pure
to calm my heart, so I'd be endure
I wore these wings, to cleanse my soul
protect myself, to keep me whole

so I was scorned, and pressured too
to do the things I swore not to
but I can only take so much
and I was tempted to give in
forget the things I cared so much

they were my net, they kept me safe
they were my strength, they made me pure
they were my soul, they set me free
they were for me, and only me

but wings can seem to hold down
to keep you from the Joys of life
and in a moment they were gone
my moment of truth, I gave in

I lost so much to gain so little
I tried so hard to learn a riddle

but in the end I hurt myself
when all the ones for whom I cared
and it surprised me when they said
they look up to me for support
that I had really let them down
I never knew how much they meant
