INSAF (Indian Social Action Forum) was established in 1993, when the social action groups and peoples movements were struggling to cope up with the changing realities of globalization & religious fundamentalism in the country. With the time, it has grown into a national forum with a political thrust, bringing together some 515 social action groups, peoples movements and progressive intellectuals to resist globalization, combat communalism and defend democracy. INSAF believes that the task is to work for the defence of sovereignty and survival of the nation. INSAF is a platform for all such groups and individuals who, in action, defend and promote values and principles such as socialism, secularism, democracy, freedom, peace, justice social, economic and culturalhuman dignity, equality, human rights, and jointly work towards the radical social transformation of the society to achieve these goals. Spread in about 14 states of the country, INSAF functions through State Units. Campaign & Solidarity Action is main plank of its programmes that are carried out through member organisations in collaboration with other secular and democratic forces. During the past few years it has concentrated its efforts to bringing into sharp focus the Campaign on Water Politics, Protest against POTO/POTA, Citizens Agenda for strengthening secular-democratic polity in India, Working Group on Gender Strategy, Solidarity with people working for alternate paradigm of development with social justice etc.
