A 'snippet' of HOW THE INNIPOOH BASKET COMPANY BEGAN:
British Decorative Artist Trudi Edmunds founded the
Innipooh Basket Company in July 2004
during a visit to Mahaballipuram, Tamil Nadu, South East India whilst on holiday. A chance meeting with a neighbour of Parvathi Manivasagam's led Trudi to meet Parvathi in person at her home, where she hand weaves items as a hobby.
The two artisans became good friends, even though they found it difficult to communicate, as neither Trudi nor Parvathi can speak each others language, they overcame this with a mixture of sign language, pointing and drawing. Trudi's friend Ramesh a local restauranteur (www.moonrakersrestaurant.com) & hotelier then assisted by translating emailed basket orders to Parvathi as he speaks both Tamil and English & has a computer! Four years on Parvathi is now able to use a computer herself, with help from her family & friends they are also able to translate the emailed orders.
Commissioning Parvathi back in 2004 to make three different sized baskets for her, Trudi then designed a cotton fabric lining & suggested she embellish the already gorgeous baskets back in the UK by adding handmade & artificial flowers, marabou feathers, small beads, gemstones etc. Trudi then got to work on marketing the concept firstly by naming the company 'Innipooh' which means 'SWEETIE' in the Tamil language (this is what Parvathi & friends call Trudi) then the logo, heart tag & handle inserts were designed. Baskets with original handles are called 'Mitzi' & Trudi decided that the different sized baskets were to be called Parvathi for the large one, the medium & smaller one are named after Parvathis two daughters Divya & Subasree. An extra large basket was introduced in 2005 which is called 'Maggi' after a teacher who commissioned a basket to be made to fit her laptop, A4 files & books in. In 2006 Trudi added lovely leather handles to the baskets which she now calls the 'Emily' range & according to customer feed back the leather handles make the baskets even more practical and gorgeous!
The sale of an Innipooh Basket Lovingly hand made in India by Parvathi & beautifully hand finished in the UK by Trudi
obviously pays for the importation & materials used to create them, but more importantly Parvathi is paid a fair wage for her labour and is able to send her children to school on a regular basis, her family also now live in a house with piped water & an inside w.c. Trudi is yet to see any profit from the business but is happy to be helping Parvathi & family have a better standard of living.
In January 2005 following the terrible Tsunami of Boxing Day 2004, Trudi returned to Tamil Nadu - volunteering to help children aged 7 to 13 come to terms with what had happend by teaching Art as Therapy in St Mary's Matriculation School - Mahaballipuram, also helping the people of Angaleeanamkupam by buying essential provisions and setting up a tailoring skills workshop. Trudi now visits schools and clubs here in the UK doing talks about her work post tsunami and about the birth and growth of Innipooh Basket Company.
