REIKI

Usui Sensi

REIKI HISTORY

Taken from:  ~ REIKI ARIZONA

Dr. Mikao Usui or Usui Sensi as his students referred to him was born in Japan on August 15, 1865 in the village of Taniai. He had an avid interest in learning and traveled extensively. He studied medicine, psychology and religion in Europe and China. Usui Sensei also studied fortune telling; which is thought to be a worthy skill in Japan.   Usui Sensei became a successful businessman but in 1914 his business and personal life were failing. As a sensitive spiritualist, Usui began spending time meditating at power spots on Mt. Kurama; where he received his early Buddhist training. Later in 1914, he enrolled in a 21 day training course called Isyu Guo. While we do not know everything he did during this training; it is likely he spent time fasting, chanting, and praying.

We also know that Usui Sensei practiced a waterfall meditation, where the initiate stands under a small waterfall, on Mt. Kurama, allowing the waters to strike and flow over the top of the head; a practice which is said to activate the crown chakra.  It was during this time that the great Reiki energy entered his crown Chakra and Usui Sensei “rediscovered” Reiki.

With this “gift” Usui Sensei began using his new healing ability to help others. For the next 7 years he worked with the poor people of Kyoto.  In 1922, he moved to Tokyo and started a healing society called Usui Reiki Healing Society or Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai. It was here as well as in Harajuku, Aoyama, Tokyo that he taught classes and gave treatments.

After the great Kanto earthquake devastated Tokyo, in 1923, Usui Sensei felt great compassion and began treating as many victims as he could with Reiki. Demand for Reiki became so great, that in 1925 he built a larger clinic in Nakano, Tokyo.  As his reputation as a “healer” grew, Usui began traveling so he could teach and treat more people. The Japanese government awarded him a Kun San To award for doing honorable work that helped others. On March 9, 1926, Usui Sensi suffered a stroke and transitioned while teaching in Fukuyama.   During his travels across Japan, he directly taught more than 2,000 students and initiated 16 teachers. Contrary to what we have been told in the West, there is no “lineage bearer” or “Grand Master” of the Usui Reiki Healing Society; only a succession of 6 presidents of the organization.

Text Box: One of the 16 teachers initiated by Usui Sensei was Chujiro Hayashi. Dr. Hayashi is not the actual successor to Usui Sensei, as has been commonly believed. The actual successor to Usui Sensei was Mr. J. Ushida. Dr. Hayashi was a respected Reiki Master, however and trained many people in return for working in his clinic, which he started in Tokyo.

Hayashi is credited with being the first to document Reiki treatments and like Usui, had printed class manuals. In 1935 Hayashi trained and attuned Mrs. Hawayo Takata; who came to his clinic from Hawaii, for chronic health problems. Mrs. Takata returned to Hawaii, established clinics and gave treatments and attunements. In 1938, during a visit to Hawaii, Dr. Hayashi acknowledged that Mrs. Takata attained the Reiki Master level and that she was one of 13 Reiki Masters Trained by him.

Mrs. Takata began teaching Reiki Masters in 1970.  Her style of teaching was very expensive and restricted note taking; relying only on memory. This was not part of the Usui system. Many believe she charged high fees to create a feeling of respect for Reiki. Before making her transition in 1980, she initiated 22 Reiki Masters and has been credited with bringing Reiki to the West.  Since Mrs. Takata’s transition Reiki has become widely available to learn at a reasonable cost. Today, many Reiki Masters rely on Reiki intuition; creating a more open and free flowing learning environment; as Usui Sensei had taught.

Reiki is an ever evolving, flexible and creative form of growth, relaxation and development. With new information recently discovered about the history and development of Reiki; Reiki Masters have passed on the heritage, reddiscovered by Dr. Usui, to create a profoundly effective relaxation, growth and creative development technique. There are over 200,000 Reiki Masters in the world today with well over 1,000,000 practitioners worldwide and the numbers continue to grow. Reiki is open to everyone to experience and learn.

WHAT IS REIKI?

Picture Taken from: Barbara Ann Brennan’s book: ”Hands of Light”

REIKI is a Japanese word, which, means “Universal Life Energy.”  REI means “spirit” or “soul”.  KI means “energy”, that which pervades and surrounds all things.

Reiki is a non-intrusive, safe and simple form of natural healing.  The treatments involve a gentle laying of the hands on various parts of the body and over symptomatic areas.  The energy is directed through the hands of the Reiki Practitioner into the client’s body, creating a deep sense of warmth, relaxation and comfort.

If you have been stuck in old patterns and behaviors that prevent you from feeling good, the loving harmony-producing energy of Reiki will clear those old patterns and behaviors and fill you with an sense of peace and well-being.

Pain and discomfort are not a natural result of aging, but they are ways our body lets us know that some aspect of our life is out of alignment or balance.  Reiki, in most cases, is able to assist the body to restore its natural balance.

Physically, Reiki is known to stop bleeding, reduce stress, cure headaches and, with continued use, reduce tumors and reverse disease.

Emotionally, Reiki creates a sense of deep comfort and solace, promoting a deeper understanding of self.

Reiki can promote mental clarity and the release of habits that are no longer serving the individual.  On the Spiritual level, you may feel a connection with the Creator, thus a sense of deep peace, inner harmony and balance ensues.

In summary, Reiki can bring the body, mind and soul into harmony by releasing physical and emotional blockages.

SENSITIZING THE HANDS

“There are two very important chakras located at the center of each palm. These chakras are called the left hand chakra and right hand chakra. They are usually about one inch in diameter.  It is through the hand chakras that prana is absorbed from the surroundings. Both the right and left hand chakras are capable of absorbing and projecting prana or ki.

“By stimulating or activating the hand chakras, the hands become sensitized; thereby developing the ability to feel subtler matter and to scan the different auras.”

Simple Hand Warm-ups:

  1. Concentrate on feeling the center of your palms and simultaneously be aware of your entire hand for about five to ten minutes.
  2. Concentration is facilitated by pressing the centers of your palms with your thumbs before starting.
  3. By concentrating at the center of the palms, the hand chakras are activated, thereby sensitizing the hands or enabling the hands to feel subtle energy or matter.

Through this exercise, you will be able to feel a tingling sensation, heat, pressure or rhythmic pulsation between the palms…

EXERCISE #2

  1. Place your hands three inches away from each other.
  2. Concentrate on the center of your palms for about 10 minutes.
  3. Inhale and exhale slowly – inhale in through your palms and exhale out of

your palms.

  1. Many of you may feel a warm tingling sensation or pulsation. This shows that you are activating your palm chakra.

SENSITIZING YOURSELF TO THE ENERGY AROUND YOU

Record everything you feel and notice in a “psychic” journal, this will assist you in becoming conscious of who you are.  It will bring into your awareness the energies that are in constant motion around you.

Go out in Nature as much as possible and walk in silence, observing everything around you.  Take a day of sight.  A day of sound, a day of touch, a day of smell, a day of feeling and a day of heart sensing.

Take charge of your thoughts. You are the creator of your reality; so, start creating the things you desire.  Focus on what you want, not on what you don’t want.  Intend that you are becoming more and more attuned to your energetic sensitivities.

Practice a Tai Chi, Qigong, Yoga or some martial/spiritual art – this will assist you to tune into the ki that flows continually in your body.

Practice breathing techniques… Breath brings the Life Force into your body, increase your energy levels and enhances your well-being.

"There is a current, or electricity, or Life Force that surges through your

Universe, indeed, through your physical world, and into your physical Being.

You are already plugged into it.  The way you utilize it towards your creative

end is by contouring it with your  thought."  ~ Abraham-Hicks
