the very first memory of penny i have is her stepping out of a cab outside the univeristy and me thinking how she wasn't actually that much like mel. my first anecdote-worthy memory however, goes like this:
that same weekend, the first time penny had come up to leeds to visit, quite early on in my relationship with mel, we went to party in the projection bar of what was then the town and country club (god rest its soul).
about halfway through the evening (say five or six pints), i was sat at the bar and out of the corner of my eye i saw a short(ish) blond sit down next to me. not really thinking, and assuming it was mel who had just plonked herself down on the stool next to me, my hand went out and onto her thigh.
a second or so later i turned to talk to her, only to be faced with penny, who was frozen to the spot with a look of horror on her face. bless her. she'll never let me forget it.
