To hear them tell the story it was a journey fraught with danger. Many times they had to leave the train and hide in nearby woods as allied planes flew overhead and at times shot at the train. It was winter and snow was thick on the ground and it was very cold. I was bundled up in blankets and my mother's greatest fear was that she would lose me out of the blankets in the rush and she would not notice. It apparently did happen to someone on the train, so it was quite a legitimate fear.
| As it turned out they where absolutely right as that part
of Germany was later occupied by the Americans.

The house, then and now. As far as I know a daughter of the original owners still lives in the house.
Frau Abeling
About 2 or 3 month after I was born my Mother and my Aunt Toni bundled me up and we went on a perilous journey to Bavaria. My Uncle Edi lived in Burghausen on the river Salzach and that was the destination. They thought it would be safer there.

For a while, I don't know how long, we lived in the castle in a tower just like the one in the picture. Then we moved to the "Neustadt". The address was, and still is, Gauss Strasse 16 and the people who rented us two rooms were Mr. and Mrs.Abeling.
