Lean Burn Conversion

The problem most F/J/M Body owners face it with the troublesome Lean Burn Ignition System.

Introduced in the mid 1970's, the Lean Burn System was designed to lower emissions. For performance applications the system was too complicated and wasn't easily modified. The only resort was to replace the system with a pre-1975 ignition system or an aftermarket system. That left removing one from a wrecked car or going to a speed shop.

The Mopar Performance Kit:

For those who like a system with stock appearance, the Mopar Performance Electronic Conversion Kit is the perfect swap. This kit was designed for conversion from points to electronic but is also perfect for swapping out the lean burn system.

To use this kit everything from the lean burn system must go.This includes:

  • Distributor

  • Computer

  • Ballast Resistor

The wires left of the dual ballast resistor will need to be wired from the firewall bulkhead to the new single ballast resistor. You will need to determine which wires are from ignition #1 (start) and ignition #2 (run). A wiring diagram from a service manual will certainly help (I don't have an electrical manual yet). There are instructions with the kit to wire up the system once the #1 and #2 ignitions are known.

The Mopar Performance Kit includes :

  • Distributor with high performance advance curve

  • Wiring Harness

  • 4 pin - Electronic Control Unit

  • Single Ballast Resistor

  • Installation Instructions

The part numbers for the kits are as follows:

  • P3690789 - Slant Six

  • P3690426 - 318/340/360

  • P3690427 - 361/383/400

  • P3690428 - 413/426W/440/426hemi
