| East Market Arts District/NuLu | ||||||
| This area of Market Street--which serves as the main pipline for a burgeoning arts and culture scene for Louisville--is known affectionately by locals and business leaders alike as NuLu. This nickname is short for "New Louisville" and a title with which the area is able to assert itself as the quintessential fresh, innovative location within the city for the visual arts, activism and the performing arts. Bound by Baxter Avenue on one side and Floyd Street on the other, this span of road is littered with businesses that cater to not only an upper-middle class demographic, but a demographic that is elevated in yet another sense: they are intellectually and artistically engaged. This district does not define itself by convential notions about wealth and money, but instead does so in a more individual and subtle way, catering to those who fit into the upper-end crossroads of two stratification systems: intellectual elites and a moneyed class. |
