| This area has not always been home, though, to people dining al fresco and post-modern sculptures lining the roads. The NuLu area is a prime example of urban renewal and regeneration, rebuilding what was once a forgotten area of the city with artistic and epicurian delights. While Market Street is the anchor for this area, it is surrounded by neighborhoods that were once forgotten but now are blossoming with stately homes and new, modernist, "eco-friendly" constructions. Not only have the neighborhoods of Butchertown, Clifton, Pheonix Hill and Irish Hill flourished, but Market Street itself has seen expansive high-end real estate developments in recent years. | |||||||||||||||||
| The urbane, intellectual ideal of living in this artsy area has struck a chord with many suburban dwellers, who are now flocking to these condominiums from suburban exile which go for $800,000+ in many circumstances. In late September, a "downtown living" tour showcased many of these gorgeous NuLu locales, including rehabilitated brownstones and new construction made out of recycled materials--complete with sliding walls--in the Butchertown neighborhood. | |||||||||||||||||

| Another one of the most direct manifestations of NuLu as an elevated social, academic and cultural area is an event known as First Friday Trolley Hop.This event uses old-fashioned, open-air trolleys to bus people around the NuLu District to various businesses which have stayed open late to accommodate this exciting night. Wines, cheeses and locally grown products pepper art galleries and antique stores as musicians play on the street. From vineyards and bodegas to organic bakeries and political headquarters, NuLu embodies a new genre of socioeconomic distinction: not only one which involves money, but an elevated sense of intellectual aesthetic. | |||||||||||||||||
