Bidies are essentially a legacy of Indian Culture . It isknown to exist for nearly a century now . A simple definition, about bidies or Poor Peoples's Cigarettes , would be, it is a mixture of blended tobacco, wrapped in tendu Leaves (Diospyros Exsculpto),cut to size, tied up with a thread, roasted in an charcoal to remove moisture and to give the inimitable flavour that brings indefinable Joy to the Smokers. The manufacturing of bidies, Consists of Two Raw Materials :-

Tobacco and
Tenduleaves

Tobacco comes from certain areas of Southern & western India and Tendu leaves from far flung places of Central India.
The Tobacco is then blended in desirable proportions and the tendu leaves are selected and cut to uniform size. The secret of a good bidi lies in the blending of tobacco and it is as such treated as a trade secret. After this , by sheer dint of experiencre, the skilled worker with his /her deft fingers, just roll the bidi in one stroke, flat at the smoking end, round at the lighting end. It is tied at the flat end with a cotton thread of a particular colour chosen to identify the manufacturers.
A quaulty control check is put through at this stage. The bidis are then roasted in charcoal fire in a specially designed roasting chambers to obtain that inimitable flavour.
