North Central Indianapolis
Delta Zeta Alumnae

Philanthropy: North Central Indianapolis Delta Zeta Alumnae Chapter supports the Indiana School for the Deaf (ISD). ISD's mission is to promote academic and social excellence for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students through a Bilingual/Bicultural environment Their philosophy is to provide language acquisition and facilitate proficiency in two languages, American Sign Language (ASL) and English. By providing an enriched academic and cultural learning environment, their Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students develop a sense of identity within the Deaf community. Students also develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to function effectively with members of a multicultural, diversified community.

The school was founded in 1834 and offers programs for children from 18 months of age through high school. Most recently the chapter donated $500 to the library for the purchase of lighted display cases. The cases are needed because the main library on campus is housed in the original gymnasium. It has been the site of the library since the mid 60's when it was moved from the 2nd floor of the main building. The books were passed assembly line style down the hallways and stairs lined with students until they reached the library. There are two additional libraries on the campus, one for the pre-school and one for the elementary. The library is also in need of volunteers. Anyone interested should contact Librarian Laura Kesterke at [email protected].

The chapter is planning to continue its work with ISD by teaming with the Preschool Supervising Teacher Diana Battiste to assist in their playground renovation. A day of working outside at ISD will be planned in the coming months. We are also working with Principal Bob Kovatch to look for any others ways the Chapter may be of assistance. We hope to foster a long-term relationship with ISD and look forward to becoming more involved with the school.
