North Central Indianapolis Delta Zeta Alumnae Meet with Caninine Companions for Independence

North Central Indianapolis Delta Zeta Alumnae
January 9, 2002.

Here's Dixie K. meeting one of the dogs (shhh... don't tell or her pet dog might be jealous!)

Canine Companions for Independence
Canine Companions for Independence is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships.

Woodbrook Elementary School Principal, Sharon Mosbaugh, a puppy raiser, began working with Sally when she was only 12 weeks old (the dog, not Sharon). After Sally went off for her formal training Sharon applied for a companion dog for her school. Much to her surprise and elation, Sally was placed with her. Sharon gave a fascinating presentation about the how a Canine Companion dog benefits her elementary school students.

Sally works with children on an amazing variety of learning skills, even reading. If a child needs extra practice or motivation to practice reading, he or she is invited to read a story to Sally... one of many popular programs. For a child who needed help with language skills, Sally was the incentive for him to speak when he had the opportunity to give her commands like "left" and "right." A moderately mentally handicapped child has his first opportunity to have a job by feeding, watering and washing Sally. Children in the nurse's office are comforted by Sally's attention.

Companion dogs have lots of friends!

Nancy H., Jen M. and Allyson C. meet a new friend.
Photographers note: Apologies to the dog for showing the rear end view!

"Wonderful" is the best word to describe this companion dog. His guardian lives alone and needs assistance with many tasks.
He can even push an emergency call button if she is unable to call for help.

After the presentation we presented a $300 check to Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) on behalf of the North Central Indianapolis Delta Zeta Alumnae chapter. The Indianpolis CCI chapter has a goal of raising $25,000 each year to help train companion dogs. Training for each dog costs between $10,000 and $12,000. Each dog can reduce a person's assistance costs by up to $40,000 per year, plus the person can sleep easier and live a more independent life. Having undertaken this new philanthropy project we hope to help the local CCI chapter in their mission through fundraising and volunteer work. While our assistance is only a small part of what they do, the CCI members are most appreciative. And the individuals who benefit from having a companion dog are the real winners in this partnership.
