AKC Delaware Valley GSD Club

Rain Drops are Falling on Team Bean

Dum dee dum dee dum.
Ok, everyone, you all hung in there and have dealt with my eighteen page reports of the Team Bean, so as a reward, you all get to have two emails about my agility dogs.

So here it is, in TWO installments, tomorrow yielding the second. This will be more of a report then my usual sense of humor coming through. I am exhausted and am really looking forward to that dinner I am having with my birthday having sister.

Maybe tomorrow, I will get back on the band wagon and actually be funny.

AKC
Level order: Novice (A&B), Open, Excellent A, Excellent B
There are no placement ribbons for NQs because AKC is unappreciative of all the hard work people put into training their NQing dogs. : )
NQ = Jumping the "pretty yellow area" on the heavy equipment, knocked bars on the jumps, exceeding refusal limits, off courses.
Q = Not goofing up. : )

Courses offered:
Standard-all of the equipment
Jumpers- jumps, tunnels, and weaves.
And I am not saying if I Qed or not. That is for you to wade through this whole email to find out. Also, I am still training Crumpie to type so hopefully he can write one of these emails. Sally has already taught Molly how to do this and well, I am feeling like an unaccomplished dog trainer. : )

In order that I ran them:

Excellent A Standard
Crumpet

This course had a somewhat odd opening, but we get through it. We haul around the course and get to the Table, which Crumpet has to jump off of. I am shocked as he has not done this in quite some time, but we recover. We then haul to a jump, U turn it back to the DogWalk.

Sigh. He jumps the yellow area, NQing us right there.  I never thought about pulling him off the course until a few hours later. I guess I was too focused on the rest of the course to be worried about the contact area. Oh well.

We haul some more, get to the Frame and then it is a full right to a jump, but there are jumps everywhere.  Just could not throw my shoulders fast enough and sent Mr. Crump over the wrong jumpoff course.
NQ
Bad me, go lay down.

Novice B Jumpers with Weaves
Harry

WAAHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Can't you tell I liked this course? Hee hee hee hee.

Harry did a beautiful job of running this course. We had a very minor conversation at the weave poles and were off and running, but when it came time for a tunnel; he just had to go and take the WRONG end. Remind me to work "Right & Left Tunnel" in class.
I think we also dropped a bar along the way.but in any case it was a BIG, GIANT.
NQ, but man was it my kind of run.
Smokin'.

Excellent A Jumpers with Weaves
Crumpet

Ever walk a course and pick out the jumps that are going to come down?
No? Well, heck, you need to get a dog. Not just any dog either. You need to get a Pembroke Welsh Corgi, and then you can share in my experience.

This course was beyond weird in sections, but Crumpie handled it beautifully.

I elected to do a lead out from the Start Line (because of a yummy tunnel trap), as I had figured that a bar was coming down someplace, so take the risk. So I walked out past the double jump, held my breath and called him over the first two jumps. Wahoooooooooo. He did not knock either down. Bad thing? He was going over the next two (Correct) jumps before I had time to move.

The only thing that kept us from a Q? Pop out on the weavesyes, Crumpie POPPING out and one knocked bar on a jump that was NOT planned on in the walk through. (That bar managed to stay up.)
NQ, but this one put my hair on fire.and I think the grass. The Crump Dude was aaaahaulin'.

Everyone cheered for Crumpie.
Why? It was not because they thought he was Fred.
It was because he was Crumpie.

While lining up for Novice Standard, I take a lot of flack for having that fall last weekend during Fred's run. People are coming out of the wood work, busting on me for such a flawless fall and gorgeous send out. I did not realize that so many people noticed, but I sure in heck did not want to repeat that one again. It took me until Wednesday to get the swelling down in my one knee and I was not going to take any chances this time around.

Novice B Standard
Fred

Did I ever mention that I love this dog? Hee hee hee hee hee.
Freeeeed.
Put Fred on the Start line and let go. He promptly knocked the first bar.

If I thought that last weekend was awesome and that we were going to repeat that performance, please. Freddy was having a grand time of barrel-chesting THROUGH, not OVER, those jumps. Waaaaaaaaaaho for Fred.

His distance work was incredible and he left me in the dust, so much so that I was cutting some serious corners just to keep up. Thank you God for "Right and Left".

This also leads me to the "before we run" warm up. We are separating Harry and Fred's crate. No more "how to get handler Joyce going" conversation.

Everyone cheered as Freddy beat his slow-butted handler over the finish line because everyone loves Fred. (Julie thinks I am joking, but everyone does cheer for and loves Fred.)
They love this dog.
I love this dog.
Freeeeeeed.
NQ

When this dog gets this last leg (win) for the NA title, Susie said she is taking Mike and me out for dinner. Following our arrival home from this said dinner, there will be a HUGE Kegger party held at my house. Dogs as well as people will all be invited.
And you all think I am joking. Just keep the beer cold and run an IV into my arm.

7 seconds later with Harry.

Novice B Standard
Harry

This is truly the "behind the shed" dog.some thing we used to threaten Crumpie's mom with after failing in obedience.

Harry gets the DW contact, Left, Over, but cannot follow the directions for a "You're drifting" Right Over command. He takes the wrong jump, and then back jumps it. Oh yeah, forgot to mention that he was 25 feet away.

We get back on track and we get to the Table. "DOWN", said in a mean Joyce voice. I have tried the nice way now it is MEANT. He goes into a down and then pops up to lick me in the face.

It is the "oh no she is mad at me" Corgi thing. He jumps on and off the table, does not try the down, even with multiple commands given. I start to reach for him to take his butt off the course and something magical happens.
He drops. He remembered our conversation from two weeks ago. : D~

Oooooooh. I thought the judge had called me for touching my dog, but she did not. (I never made contact with him.) The next obstacle is the Tip. Harry barely makes it, but it is legal. Hurray for Harry.

Jump, right, frame..makes the contact..jump (it falls), chutefinish.

The good thing is that Harry was more in control despite the fact that I did not have the time to run his butt off before running the course.
Everyone cheered.
Why?
Because it was Harry
And because they cannot figure out how this blonde chick does it.
NQ

I get stopped shortly after running Harry by Nancy (with Patti the BC). She wanted to know where the heck I have ever gotten not one FAST Corgi, but THREE. She was not at the Corgi National last week to see some great examples of those fine Border Corgis.
It is called challenge their intelligence and let "em go. You just NQ a WHOLE lot.

We packed up and came home.

For those who know and care:
Y2K9s was well represented today.
Everyone can write about their own accounts, Molly can type hers. I am just doing the reporting.

Elaine & Nan (Border Collie) NQed in both Open Jumpers and Open Standard. Weave Pole problems killed them in Jumpers and the DW in standard. (Can't you tell Nan and Crumpie are best friends?)
Cindy & BG (Sheltie) took a 1st Q in Novice A Jumpers but in Novice A Standard, Chute problems killed them in the end. Darned, wet, tangled-up chute.
Karen & Mozart (Papillion) took 1st place Qs in both Novice A Jumpers and in Standard. Everyone cheered for Mozart too. Karen should be proud of herself for really working those contacts.
Sally & Molly (Australian Sheepdog) took a 1st place Q in Novice A Jumpers, but in Novice A Standard, Molly had to go and tip the broad jump. Otherwise, it was a gorgeous, CLEAN, FAST run.

Well, that was my Saturday. There is nothing like getting up LATE and then rushing out the door. That is also when you discover that it is also raining and you have an entire day to stand on a field and get drenched.
And we get to do it again tomorrow.
Joyce, The Captain of Team Bean.

Rain Drops Stopped Fallin' on Team Bean

Howdy Hooooooooooooooo, everyone.

Did you all enjoy this dreary Sunday?
No? Well then, you all need to get into a sport that requires you to be on a field at 7:30am, rain or shine.

Today it was rain in the morning.

also had the pleasant experience of waking up to Mike asking if I was suppose to be someplace. In my groggy, waking up to reality state, I answered something to the effect that I was supposed to be on a field. His response? "Well you had better get moving because I hear birds." One does not hear birds at 5am.

Oh my gosh..and I am off and running to get the dog fed & walked and me ready to go. I was half an hour from the show site and it was 7am. Fret not, my little Civic got me there exactly on time with no points on my driver's license.
Hooray for me.

This next part is hard to form. I know I have already done this for the Y2K9s email group about obedience, but I thought I would add a page to this email to thank all of the people that make agility fun for me.

First off, the "Adventures of Team Bean" emails were originally formed for Betsy and Anne. It was an ooops email that got sent to both when I really meant to send each one of these women a personalized copy of my runs with Crumpie. It just kinda grew from there. Now you know whom to shoot.

I want to thank Susie E. for sharing her RV and providing Crumpie & myself with a lot of human "sitting on the field" equipment. I also want to thank her for letting me handle Fred and Harry, as just as much as we humans challenge their Corgi intelligence, they are challenging my human one.

Thanks for the experience.
I want to thank all of the agility people that put up with us while sitting on the agility field. You all make it so much fun for me..and that is why you will always find Crumpie & me on the field with a cup of coffee in my hand at 6am.

Finally, I want to thank all of you who read these Team Bean emails. Without all of your comments, well wishing, and support, I think I would not find the "delight" in my NQs the way I do.

I would thank Mikie for his support, but he gets the run down when I get home. Be happy you are not him.
Thanks guys.

AKC
Level order:
Novice (A&B),
Open, Excellent A, Excellent B

There are no placement ribbons for NQs. AKC just loves their technical courses to help the hosting clubs save on "ribbon money".
NQ = Jumping the "pretty yellow area" on the heavy equipment, knocked bars on the jumps, exceeding refusal limits, off courses.

Courses offered:
Standard-all of the equipment
Jumpers- jumps, tunnels, and weaves.
There are going to be no "bottom of the page" summaries anymore. I know my sister's habit now. : 0

In order that I ran them:

Excellent A Standard
Crumpet

This was the same judge we had at the Corgi National last week. She was still using the idea that slow, little dogs were going to be her only Qers..and she was right.

Okie Fadokie, we are off and hauling, except when Crumpie comes off the frame, I look up and see the Tire. For the life of me I cannot remember what the thing is called and Crumpie's forward motion carries him right past the obstacle. Refusal and NQ right there. To add insult to injury, he then goes and back-jumps the darned thing.

I put him back through the Tire, call right, and then Walk (DogWalk). We haul to the end.that has one heck of a U shaped tunnel ten feet from the bottom. The DW is lined up with the left ended tunnel, but since this IS the Excellent course, we have to go through the right-ended tunnel.

Ok, I have two things going on here. The DW yellow contact area that Crumpie just LOVES to jump and a yummy butt tunnel trap. Crumpie starts his decent on the DW and slows himself down. In the process he looks up and sees the tunnel. Dilemmas for such a little dog that early in the morning. He makes the contact and as soon as I see that, I issue the Right, TIRE command while throwing out my right arm. He goes straight, then turns to the right, looks back. I must be crazy. There is no Tire.

Oooops my bad, Crump, "Right TUNNEL, Crump". Honest to god, I saw this giant light bulb go on over his head as he realized I meant RIGHT TUNNEL. He looks back to the tunnel, eye-spies the correct end, turns his body to the left and barely makes it into the tunnel.

Holly Tomoly, Crump, I cannot believe you just did that," I say to my now disappeared dog. The judge cracks up laughing and Crumpie appears two seconds later with the biggest Crumpie smile on his little doggie face. He was incredibly proud of himself.

Needless to say the rest of the course was done to perfection with not ONE bar down. That is because we NQed at the Tire of all things.

Ironically, Crumpie's command for the tire is Ring.
Now you know why I am the Captain of Team Bean.

Only six people cheered for us. I think I like the people running in Novice so much better.

Novice B Jumpers with Weaves.
Harry

I was looking forward to running this course with Mr. Harry but he just had other plans. Since I was late getting to the site I did not have time to run his little butt off. So instead he got me back and ran mine off instead.
We never got past the weave poles, which was obstacle number 7 because Harry was carried off the course.
Oh no, Poor Harry.
NQ

Excellent A Jumpers with Weaves
Crumpet

While walking this course, I had picked out where the bars were coming down, as some of these turning sequences were difficult. I did however, really like this course. I was not disappointed.

I had also elected to do a two jump lead out because of yet another yummy tunnel trap. Hey, why not? Crumpie is retired from getting any more titles and is strictly out there to run his little Corgi body off. He just needs to listen and keep performing for those Gummy Bears my dad keeps sending me home with.

The whole run was in control except for one area that I had problems with. Yes, I could have handled it better, but I did not and that cause one little PVC bar to fall. After a few more jumps, Crumpie has to go and pop out on the same set of weave poles that he did yesterday. Hummmmmmm. I think that question has been answered.

As we finish the last half of the course and cross the finish line, only five people cheer (the sixth had to be in the other ring).
It seems that nobody loves Crumpie.
And then Joyce smiles. Ha ha ha ha.
NQ

Novice B Standard
Fred

My buddy, Freeeeeeed.
Did I ever mention that I love this dog?
Freeeeed.

This course had four jumps and one broad jump. The rest was the fun stuff. I have hope for Fred. My heart is beating and Fred is really focused. This is his final AKC run for the year and the agreement is that if he Qs, he retires forever. If not, he does Obedience for the winter months and comes to live with me in January for retraining of his jumping.so that he gets that one LAST novice win.

I learned from my mistake of yesterday and put Fred waaaaaaaaaaaay back from the Start Line. Hold on until I can cross over to his left, look up, let go, and call Frame. He sails over the first jump and misses the Frame. How that is possible I have no idea, but getting Freddie glasses is a really good idea. I pull him back and he goes over. He is over and gone before I can do anything else.
Waaaaaaaaaaaaait for meeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, Freeeeeeeeeeeeeed".

I call the Tire, then tunnel, and he is gone. He gets the DW contact and comes to the next two jumps on the course. In typical Fred style, he takes them both out and then will not sit on the table. He has to go and do a Tip "fly-off" but sails over the broad jump, hits the cute, and CLEARS that panel jump that all of the boys have been knocking since the C. National last week.

Everyone cheers because everyone loves Fred.
I love Fred even though he knocked two out of four jumps on the course.
Freeeed.
NQ because he really wants to stay with Mike and me.

7 seconds later with Harry.

Novice B Standard
Harry

Harry keeps it together until we hit the DW.  He has to go and jump the contact.  Then we get to the Table and we have to have a conversation about a plain old sit.  Finally we are off and ready to do the Tip, but in Harry fashion, he jumps off before he can get to his fulcrum point.  He then takes the wrong end of the tunnel, but does haul his butt over the Broad jump, chute, and Panel jump.
It all took 3 seconds to do. Harry was flying faster then an F-14 being catapulted off an aircraft carrier. I was his Reel along for the ride.
Everyone cheered for Harry.
Everyone cheered for the blonde chick that could finally go home and sit for five minutes.
NQ

For those who know and care:
Once again, Y2K9s was well represented today.

Elaine & Nan (Border Collie) NQed in both Open Jumpers and Open Standard. Believe it or not, the only thing that kept them out of the ribbons was "tenth pole" pop-out weavepole problems. They both had two awesome runs that should have been Qs.
Congrats to Elaine for her handling and strategy.

Cindy & BG (Sheltie) were only entered in Novice Standard, but at the last second, BG had to pop out of the Chute. To save his life, he would not get into the darned thing. Cindy had done a beautiful job of getting BG through the course and she gets a click and Gummy Bear treat.

Karen & Mozart (Papillion) joined the "yummy tunnel" society on their Novice jumpers run, but took 1st place in Novice standard for yet another flawless run. Once again, everyone cheered for Mr. Mozt.

Sally & Molly (Australian Sheepdog)  NQed on their Novice Jumpers. (Forgive me as I did not see the run), but they did take a 2pl Q for the Novice Standard run.& Sally did an awesome job of getting that "BIG over" command out when it came to the broad jump. Molly responded in doing a BIG over.
Yes, Sally, you did do a lane change to let me pass. Thanks for the laugh for the ride home. The funniest part is that I was content with staying behind you and your Firestone Tires.

A hardy congrats go out to these guys from the members of Team Bean for doing all of the Qing this weekend. What a great way to start out one's AKC Agility career.

That was my Sunday. Who needs a Gym membership?
Hope all of you had a great weekend too!!!!!!!!

Joyce, The Captain of Team Bean.
