| The doctor was his MOTHER!! | ||||||

Alright, I know what you're thinking. Why on Earth would there be such a degrading representation of a female doctor being used on this page? I'll start by explaining that the riddle you have just worked plays on gender stereotypes most people deny possessing. For example, if I were to ask people, "Can women be doctors?", there are very few people today who would answer "no". On the other hand, a lot of people find this riddle to be challenging because its difficult for them to think past the gender stereotype of doctors being men. Furthermore, the only common image of female doctors people are exposed to might resemble the figure on the left, which was the first image to pop up on a google search of "female doctor" (give it a try to see what pops up). These kind of underlying biases are known as implicit biases, and even though we are unaware of them, they can often affect our judgment. In this example, they impair people's judgment in solving the riddle, but in the real-world the consequences of implicit bias can be more severe.
