Do you think white Americans are better than African Africans?  Do you prefer one over the other?  Do women belong in the fields of science and math, or is that just for men?  Hopefully your conscious answer to all of these questions would be no, but do you know what your unconscious mind would answer?  As youve learned, our brain is pre-programmed to make snap judgments when provided with information.  Unfortunately, one of the easiest things for our brains to
access on a subconscious level is information that has been the most commonly or recently encountered, such as stereotypes present in the media, jokes, and sometimes even in conversations with friends and family.
Subconscious biases often created by this most easily accessed information are known as implicit biases, and almost everyone has them.  In this country, there is an overwhelming preference for European Americans over African Americans, even among African Americans!  There is also a very strong association between men and science, and women and the arts.  If you want to know what your implicit biases might be, visit the
Harvard Implicit Association Test (IAT) website.  And if your scores arent exactly what you hoped for, click here to read about ways you can work on altering your implicit biases using your mouth.
