Hold a pencil in it!
The IAT that detects an implicit preference for either European Americans or African Americans is based on how quickly and accurately a test-taker is able to pair either positive or negative words with the races.  For example, most test-takers take much longer to pair a positive word with an African American face than a European face, but are able to more quickly pair a negative word with an African American face than a European face.  This kind of response reveals an implicit preference for
European American faces over African American faces.  As youve learned before, these implicit responses are often based on what has been recently and consistently encountered.  For a fun way to try to change your score, use this cool exercise.

1. Hold a pencil in your mouth (without letting your lips touch it!) for 5 minutes while reading a positive story about the race you did not have a preference for.  For example, if your test score revealed a preference for European Americans over African Americans read a biography of Martin Luther King, Jr. for five minutes.  If it was the other way around, try reading a story about John F. Kennedy or another American President you respect and admire.

2. For 5 more minutes, without a pencil in your mouth, read a story with a negative message about the race you did have a preference for.  For example, if your test score revealed a presence for European Americans, you could read about Adolf Hitler.  If you scored a preference for African Americans, try reading about the book O.J. Simpson was going to release about how he murdered his wife (if he did it).  These are just suggestions.  You could use your own story.

3. Immediately re-take the test.  Your test-scores will likely change!

4. After you re-test,
