| Favorite Places to Eat | San Diego |
| Brockton Villa $10-20 |
This restaurant has all of the best things that San Diego has to offer. It's tucked away in Downtown La Jolla, in a quaint, historical Victorian house with gorgeous views of La Jolla Cove. Go for brunch and enjoy their stuffed French toast or their crab cake sandwiches. | 1235 Coast Blvd, La Jolla, (858) 454-7393 |
| Tea Station $3-10 |
This place serves the best boba in the world. They make their tea strong and flavorful and their tapioca balls always have just the right amount of chewiness. Don't miss out on their Green Tea with Boba, Strawberry Slushie, Hot Almond Tea with Boba, Deep Fried Pork with Rice, and House Special Noodles. | 7315 Clairemont Mesa Blvd, SAN DIEGO 858-268-8198; 9003 Mira Mesa Blvd, SAN DIEGO 858-527-1888 |
| Cotija's $5-10 |
Mexican food in San Diego is incredible - but this place specializes in shrimp burritos, where wadfuls of tiger shrimp are stuffed into saucy tortillas - for $3.99! They also have great flautas, tamales, and fish tacos. Don't be put off by the dingy atmosphere - you're only a 15-min walk from the Pacific Beach pier! | 1092 Garnet Ave, (Pacific Beach), San Diego, CA (858) 273-1241 |
| Indian Tandoor $5-10 |
It's a hole-in-the-wall mom&pop kind of place where orders can take up to an hour to fill... but the food is unforgettable. Their naan is freshly baked, their Tandoori chicken is crunchy outside and juicy inside, and their curries are a pleasureable indulgence to the palate. This is where those who miss their mom's Indian home-cooking go. Call in your orders ahead of time, or go for the weekday lunchtime buffet. | 6755 Mira Mesa Boulevard, MIRA MESA 858.558.1939 |
| Pho Cali $5-10 |
You can be seated, have your order taken, and be feasting on enormous bowls of pho in less than 10 minutes. There's plenty of mint, basil and bean sprouts to throw into your generous helping of fresh tripe and raw beef. Personally, I love their rice vermicelli with BBQ chicken and egg rolls. | 7330 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., #A102, SAN DIEGO (next to Ethan Allen) 619-268-1168 |
| Donovan's $30+ |
If the sky is the limit for your culinary budget, Donovan's is a definite must visit. Repeatedly voted as the best steakhouse in the United States, this place also excels in world-class service. You're treated like royalty and your rare steak will be dripping with pink beef juices. | 4340 La Jolla Village Drive, SAN DIEGO 858-450-6666 (need reservations) |
| Roy's $30+ |
This is another pricey restaurant that my friend took me to as a thank-you dinner. She raved about the chocolate souffle where molten chocolate oozed out of the middle. At first I didn't think much of the plain, unassuming restaurant sitting only steps away from the local post office. Then, I tasted their buttery sole, and knew that I'd never tasted anything like it. Crunchy at the edges, tender in the center, served with a sauce that defied explanation... this was the successful fusion of the best of Japanese and American cuisine. And don't you dare pass up that chocolate souffle with the molten chocolate oozing out! | 3709 Convoy St., SAN DIEGO 858-565-6888 |
| Royal Thai Cuisine $10-15 |
Delicious Thai food in a pleasant setting - this is a favorite of many of my friends. Portions are "Thai-sized" (small) but the prices are reasonable and the indoor water fountain is very soothing. | 737 Pearl Street, LA JOLLA 858.551.THAI |
| Yoshi Sushi $20-30 |
After having had Bay Area sushi for so many years, San Diego sushi is a disappoinment. This is the only place which comes close to having sushi that melts in your mouth. Their prices are reasonable for sushi. | 6755 Mira Mesa Boulevard, MIRA MESA 858.587.4755 |
| Emerald Chinese Restaurant $10-20 |
More expensive and more elegant than most dim sum restaurants, but definitely the best in San Diego. The guys will love the girls in short traditional Chinese dresses, or chi-poas. | 3709 Convoy St., SAN DIEGO 858-565-6888 |
| Rei do Gado $10-30 |
Whether you prefer the exotic lure of Brazilian BBQ, or the thick Portugese accents of their gorgeous Brazilian waiters (heh heh), this place is unforgettable. The lunch buffet has tropical salads, exotic fruits, and mouth-watering grilled meats - served personally at your table. Only drawback - trying to find parking in the Gaslamp Quarter. | 939 Fourth Avenue, SAN DIEGO 619-702-8464 |
| El Pescador <$10 |
A beautiful local place to have fresh fish, crab or shrimp sandwiches. | 627 Pearl St, La Jolla (858) 456-2526 |
| The Fish Market $10-30 |
The Fish Market can be found up and down CA for reliably fresh, traditional seafood. This is their flagship restaurant, ideal for out-of-town guests. The second-story restaurant, Top of the Market, is classy with views of the Coronado Bridge. | 750 North Harbor Drive, San Diego (619) 232-3474(FISH) |
| Extraordinary Desserts $10-20 |
A great place to indulge in lush, sinful desserts with your friends on a late Saturday night. It'll cost you a pretty penny, but you'll feel like you're in Paris. | 1430 Union Street, SAN DIEGO 619-294-2132 |
| Krispy Kreme $1-5 |
This place will make you fat. You become addicted to their warm, doughy, sinfully sugar-glazed donuts that just came out of the vat of hot oil. It doesn't help that they charge 70 cents for one donut, but only $4 for a whole dozen. | 4180 Clairemont Mesa Blvd, SAN DIEGO 858-273-4581 |
