Photography
Photography and scrapbooking are obsessions of mine. One of my photos taken in Salzberg, Austria, was printed in the UCSD SOM school magazine, The Human Condition as well as in msJAMA. I'm pretty proud of that! If you're not familiar with scrapbooking, you'd probably be amazed to hear it's a multibillion dollar industry. There are actually these cruises where you can scrapbook in the convention halls with others while traveling around the world.
DISNEY
I am a Disney nut. I have Disney sweatshirts, soap dispensers, towels, scores of DVDs, figurines, catalog covers, and even a Mickey lamp that says: "Hey - who turned out the - oh, heh-heh, I did!" I know Disneyland as well as I know my own house. My dad began taking me there every year since I was two. He was also the one who bought me the Mickey doll for $2, despite arguemnts from my mom and my grandmother that I was being spoiled. (Okay, just a little!) I thought about being married at Disneyland - arriving in a Cinderella's glass carriage pulled by four miniature horses and waving at my wedding guests from atop the Sleeping Beauty Castle (they really do offer that - for a "small" sum!), but my husband didn't go for it.
Pixar
While Disney will always be the father of animation in my book, Pixar is one incredible company. Their works: "a bug's life," "Toy Story," "Toy Story 2," "Monsters, Inc," "The Incredibles" - are well-deserving of the income they've generated. Be sure to check out the short clips under the "Short Films" link. My favorite is "Geri's Game."
Wushu
Although time restraints currently dictate otherwise, I've been a follower of wushu since childhood. Wushu is a form of kung fu, but more artistic and symbolic of Chinese perfection. My wushu instructer (Quan!) used to teach us, when performed properly, Wushu is like a magical flash of silks and silver weaponry, with brief pauses that allows the audience time to breathe and take pictures! The world-renowned Jet Li is one unbelievably talented wushu master. His website is amazing, and a great way to learn more about him.
Piano
Like most Asian parents, my parents began taking me to piano lessons before I could read. After learning music by Beethoven, Bartok, Liszt, Bach and Mozart, Chopin, I feel, is the most talented of them all. He composed my favorite piece, Fantaisie-Impromptu, after the woman he loved married another man. "Today I completed the Fantaisie - the sky is beautiful and my heart is heavy - but this does not matter. If it were otherwise, then my existence would have been of no use to anyone. Let us wait until after death"- from a letter to J. Fontana
Tennis
When I played for Westminster High School's girls' varsity tennis team (GO LIONS!), every aspiring girl was in love with Andre Agassi. He was the rebel who tied a bandanna around his head and wore neon shorts to the uptight Wimbledon. Then he married Brooke Shields and his faltering game was blamed on rising star Pete Sampras - although we all knew that if he had married one of us instead, he'd have stayed at the top of his game. Happily, he came to his senses and married one of the world's greatest tennis players of all time instead, Steffi Graf, and returned to the top 10 - proving our theory. If you think this is just idolistic infatuation, he was also reported to have shaved off all of his hair in support of his sister who had to undergo chemotherapy for breast cancer... Doesn't that just melt your heart? Check out the USTA website!
U.C. Berkeley
I adored college life - perhaps a little too much! For one measly semester out of my four years at UC Berkeley, I made it onto the Dean's Honor List... I can't help it if evaluators failed to recognize that I also learned to ballroom dance, play Broomball, practice wushu, scrapbook, and create newspapers on Pagemaker in college!
"Friends"
In college, every Thursday from 8-8:30pm, we'd all cram into a tiny dorm room and crane our necks towards the 19" screen to watch "Friends." Also check out other websites: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
John Mayer
Some of my friends find his music a little sappy, but I feel like he's putting poetry to music. You can check out the lyrics to his most popular song, "your body is a wonderland," and learn more about him on his website. Also on his website is an action where all funds raised supports the Back To You Fund, that distribute monies to programs in health care, education, support for the arts, and development of talent. How cool is that?
Triathlon
I sort of stumbled into the sport of triathlon. When I first heard about triathlons in college, I thought it was the most ridiculous, suicidal sport ever. I never even imagined I would be attempting my first triathlon in June. Then medical school happened, and there was no time for tennis nor wushu anymore. All I could do to squeeze in a workout was put on a pair of running shoes and put in a couple of miles. That led to a series of running events, like the San Dieguito 5K, the Bay to Breakers, and the Run to the Far Side. That combined with Teddy's love for biking - as well as my 30mph crash - kept me in shape for both running and biking. Then we joined a beautiful Club One gym and learned to swim in their Masters program... so that's three. If you're interested in training for one yourself, check out this website.
