MANUFACTURE OF CHEMICALS USED IN SHEEP BREEDING

Introduction

Livestock farming in agriculture requires the use of chemicals (such as pesticides, antibiotics, vitamin supplements etc) so as to have a successful farming, without which diseases will ruin the lives of the animals and lead to large losses in the farming practices.  This lesson will show the students how much valuable chemicals used to treat and prevent various sheep diseases are manufactured in the industry.

Subject and Grade level: GRADE LEVEL 11

Lesson Goals

·        For students to see how valuable chemicals are manufactured by chemical industries.

·        For students to know the type of raw materials used to make a particular drug or pesticide and by products obtained.

·        For students to also see the effect these processes in the industry have on the environment.

Content Objectives

¨      Students will learn about manufacturing processes

¨      Students will learn about trade names and chemical names of materials

¨      Students will also learn more about the environment and the effects industries have on them

Performance Objectives

§        Students will produce flow diagrams of the manufacturing processes

§        Students will transfer their work into power point presentation template.

Technology Objectives

§        Students will use the Internet to find information on chemical industries, manufacturing processes of pesticides and their effects on the environment.

§        Students will use word processing to record their findings and to produce the flow charts.

§        Students will use PowerPoint to present their work.

Instructional Activities (teacher component)
I, the teacher will give them a list of chemicals used in Sheep breeding on a flip chart, I will also provide some web addresses on flip charts for them to start off (they will have to search for more on their own). I will create a folder where the various groups of students will submit their work.  Students will learn to save their work every 5mins on the hard drive to be on the safe side in case power failure occurs.

Learning Activities (student component)
Students will be learning how to search for information on the internet.  They will be copying relevant information from their findings into word.  They will also be putting down flow charts and save their work from time to time on the hard drive.  They will learn how to give presentations of their work using PowerPoint application.

Instructional Strategies
Students will be instructed on how to log on to the Internet and to download or copy relevant information unto the hard drive.  I will make sure they also save promptly so as not to lose documents in case of power failure.  I will provide assistance for weak students while giving credit to those who are fast in learning.

Project Assessment
The learning goals will be assessed by the content and quality of the presentations.  There will also be a test during the next lesson after the assignment must have been completed.

§        Project Materials and Handouts
Flip charts on web pages and chemicals

§        Print out of their work and other resources from the web sites visited.
