All foreign workers are considered temporary workers and therefore need employment authorisation before they can work in Canada. (See, exemptions, however, under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

The live-in caregiver programme is, however, a special programme. It is designed to help or give care to children, disabled people or the elderly by foreign workers for a consistent period of two years. After this time the worker will qualify to apply for permanent residence status with his/her family. Furthermore, he/she will qualify to work in any field that is available on the Canadian job market. Three main criteria are required to qualify for this program:

i. Possess the equivalent of a Canadian high school diploma;
ii. Done at least 6 months of full time training or 12 month experience in a field related to caregiving for the categories of people mentioned above;
iii. Able to speak, read and understand English or French.

Application Process:

i. Prospective employer submits application to Human Resources Canada for a job validation;
ii. Applicant submits documents, such as diplomas, etc attesting to his/her academic qualifications;
iii. Applicant undergoes medical test;
iv. Application for employment authorization;*
v. Application for visa.*

*It will be our responsibility to help you with steps iv. and v.

After a period of two years of working as a live-in caregiver, you will qualify to apply for permanent residence status together with your dependent family members. Furthermore, you will qualify to work, after obtaining your permanent residence, in area of your choice.

B: SEASONAL WORKERS
