| The Iloilo Mountaineering Club started as an informal outdoor group in early 70�s under the leadership of Victor Pison. Together with some relatives and friends, they named the group �Ilonggo Mountaineering Society.� They first climbed Mt. Kanlaon at Negros Occidental on April of 1970. Climbs to Mt. Baloy, Mt. Nangtud and Mt. Madia-as followed. In 1979, the IMC represented by Victor Pison and Fred Tayo, participated in the organizational meeting of the National Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines, now the Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines, Inc. (MFPI) held at Davao City. Organized by the Department of Tourism and in cooperation with Philippine Airlines, it was the first gathering of the seven mountaineering clubs in the country. After the meeting the group climbed Mt. Apo, traversing from Kidapawan, North Cotabato to Kapatagan, Digos, Davao del Sur. In 1980, the IMC was one of the eleven charter signers of the National Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines� Constitution and By-Laws at the peak of Mt. Apo. Since then, the IMC actively participated in all the Federation�s climbs and activities. In 1981, together with the Antique Mountaineering Society, they hosted the 2nd Mountaineering Congress and Climb at Mt. Madia-as. In 1988, the IMC was incorporated and registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission as a non-stock, non-profit corporation. And since then has engaged in the conservation and reforestation activities in cooperation with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. The IMC again in 1992, hosted the 13th MFPI Congress and Climb at Mt. Tigum. Traversing from Maasin, Iloilo to San Remegio, Antique. The Clubs help was instrumental in the establishment of other mountaineering organizations based in the different school campuses in the City of Iloilo, such as: the Central Philippine University Mountaineering Society the University of Philippines-Visayas Mountaineering Society the University of San Agustin Mountaineering Society. The Club has also participated in several Mountain Search and Rescue Operations. One was when the Cebu Pacific Flight 387 airplane crashed at Mt. Sumagaya, Misamis Oriental on February 1998. For its participation on the rescue operation, the club was awarded a Presidential citation for Humanitarian Services. In 2000, the IMC again, hosted the 20th MFPI Congress and Climb at Guimaras Island. And the rest is history. |
