Mom and Dad on the Appalachian Trail

The trail....

Mom pointing to an Appalachian Trail markerMom and Dad hiked up Blood Mountain during their cross-country trip during March and April of this year. Blood Mountain is the first big mountains thru-hikers come across when they start in the Southern Terminus of the trail. The trail begins in Northern Georgia and goes over two thousand miles to end in Maine.

Dad pointing to an Appalachian Trail markerI've hiked up Blood Mountain, and the few days leading up to the mountain, I heard a lot of comments on how tough it was. When I finally made it to the base, I had hiked nine miles already that day, it was about three in the afternoon, and there were hurricane warnings. (It is amazing how accruate weather forecast hikers can have days from civilization.) I thought I would never get to the top. I did, and spent the night in an old stone shelter as the only woman surrounded by 20 males- most of them boy scouts. I slept between two people I had only met that day, and rain leaked on my head, feet, and waist. It was cold, too, only just above freezing.

Mom pointing to an Appalachian Trail markerI survived, of course. So to hear that my parents also made the trek up the same mountain makes me very proud. My parents are cool. In this picture to the left, my mom is leaning against a sign that says "Blood Mountain Wilderness". I suppose they sent me the picture of the sign to not only prove that they were on the trail, but went up the mountain, too.
