Everyone in society wants to feel like they belong to something or that they fit in. When people try to fit in and belong they tend to BUY into things. They see all the ads that the media puts out and how those models look so happy, beautiful, powerful, wealthy ect. People start to become envious and everyone wants to feel excepted. So they will go out and buy clothes and shoes, cars and technologies, and all the designer name brands or even the worst things, such as cigaretts. In all reality people do want to fit in but also they have the CHOICE to choose if they want to buy into all the ads the media  sends out. Some other ways of wanting to be cool or be popular would to do certain activities that would not be appropriate at a certain age. Such things would include smoking and drinking. Cigarette companies promote their products to the young because they know the younger generation wants to fit in and that they think it is cool if they smoke. Coolness is not measured in what you are wearing, driving, or anything else. It is more so measured in the person you are, but, in most cases people do not see it that way. "We have been recruited into roles and behavior patterns we did not consciously choose" (Kalle Lasn; The Cult You're In (53).
