Finally, it stops raining (2)

On Monday, I went to Nottingham, a beautiful city 20 minutes away from Loughborough if you go by train. There I met William, a friend of mine in my College, who reads biology with me and is an excellent double bass player as well. Soon, I discovered that he also drives quite well. In Britain, most school leavers know how to drive since it is a necessity to live in Britain, esp. if one lives in a village.

William drove me to the city centre, which is quite beautiful but pretty small. There I pay a visit to the Council House, the market square, and an old parish church, St. Mary’s. Nottingham is the fruit of Industrial Revolution. It grew rapidly with its industry. It is famous for its garment industry, esp. lace. There is a Lace Museum in the city centre as well.

Then he drove me home. It is a small village north of the city and it took us half an hour to arrive there. Quiet and beautiful, yes, it is a small typical English village. There, I understood at last what a cottage was: a small (compared with HK, it is big) house of 2 or 3 storeys, with gardens around the house. His cottage was rather new, only 6 years old.

After lunch, we walked around his village. There was an old parish church. It is pretty small, but it plays a role in the village life. According to the tradition of the Anglican Church, each church has its own parish, an area of which the church serves. In the rural area of England, usually there is only one small church in one village. So, the parish equals the village. There is a parish council in which the villagers elect some people to represent themselves to deal with the affairs of the village. Although nowadays not many English people go to church as in the past, the parish church and its council still play a role in serving the village community.

There is a hill behind the village. We walked along the muddy path (because it rains a lot), and the scenery of the green countryside is wonderful. Across a large patch of field where winter wheat was sowed, I could see a slightly rugged landscape with small houses like “Lego” built along the valleys and plains. There were some sheep afar, and a horse nearby.  Everything is green and peaceful. How pleased is it in the eyes of a city-dweller like me!

We took some photographs. I like photography, although not as keen as some of my classmates did in St. Paul’s College. William is a keen photographer as well. Back to his home, he showed me his album of the most beautiful photos he took. It was very good indeed. I hope one day I can take photographs as good as his.

After playing piano for a while, (I miss the piano so much as I have not practised it for two months already), he drove me to the famous Nottingham Castle. Have you heard of Robin Hood? Actually, I have to admit that I knew nothing of him except his name before I came to Nottingham, (although what I know now is still very little). It is the castle which was made famous by his legends. It is now a museum and an art gallery. On top of the hill where the castle stands, one can have an excellent view of the whole Nottingham.

The sun is lazy in winter. It was already dark by 5pm. After a wonderful trip in Nottingham, it was time to say goodbye. Thank you, William.

William
