With is great variety of climate and topography,from sandy desert to perpectual snow and from the low coastal plains to the giants of the Atlas ,Morocco has a rich and varied flora ,attractive to the layman because of the beauty of the vast spreads of colour pointed by the meadow flowers in spring and early summer ,and of interest to species are narrowly endemic ,and often unique, particlarly at high altitudes.
Meadows in spring and early summer look oriental carpets, woven with species of Calendula (pot marigold);Centanrea, Matthiola,lupin ,Echium ,Lavender and members of Chrysantheunium family.
A laller accent is given by the asphodels,resedas,anchusasfemel and the century plant ;which produces a magnificent spike of a flower from its prickly rosette once every 100 years .
Many spacies of convulvulus decorete the roadside .In ilghtly wooded country there is a wealth of Orchids. The Narcissus family represented, especially by some of its miniature members .The vast Euphorbia germs is there ,particularly in arid areas,and the country is rich in prickly ,this plants ,such as Echinops rittro,a familiar sight in English herbaceons borders ,and Silybum marianum,the holy or milk thisthe,with its white-moltled,deeply cut leaves.
The iris� family is also widespeard, especialy in coastal regions. the cedars (cedras libani ,and cedrus atlantica ) especially the blue varety (glauca) found in the Middle Atlas and the Rif ;the corh oak (Quercus suber),widespread in the regions borderring the N and NW coasts ; ancient olive trees, particularly around Mekness;date palms (very beautiful in flower)in the pre- Saharan Oases, and the curius Argan (Argania sideroxylm) along the SW coats climb Agadir into which goats climb in search of the olive-like fruit, and deposite the stones from which a useful oil is extracted.
Shrubs and small trees are mostly of the marquis type:many varietiess of cistus or rock rose with it crumpled ptals and sticky� aromatic foliage;brooms ,of whch one endmic� variety,Cytisus battandieri,is now very popular in English gardens ;the acacias ,wattles or mimosas; olcanders(Nerum Oleander) flowering from April to September along the dried-up water courses and ,occasionally to be seen in some sheltered valleys,Arbutus uneds, the strawberry tree.
