| Legend has it that the municipality was first settled by a couple named PADOKA and ADIAN in Padis. To survive, the couple planted root crops to augment their provisions of food. PADOKA also became a skillful hunter. Many years after a pregnant cow of the couple was nowhere to be found on its pen. The couple, together with their sons and daughters, searched the vicinity for the missing cow. Later, ADIAN discovered that the cow headed eastward via a lower-dike mountain. He followed the footprints going to Mt. Kipay untill they found the missing cow on a cave at the side near the spring. THe place was abundant with BAUKOK tress. Because the place had a friendly terrain, ADIAN decided to transfer his whole family there. Time came when there was rampant cutting down of Baukok trees by the inhabitant, who had became by then numerous, to make houses. To preserve the memory of the specie of trees that once abounded in the area, Opegs descendant called the place BAUKOK which was later on shortened to BAUKO for euphony. This was how BAUKO got its name. Now Bauko is a 4th class municipality in mountain province and has the largest population in Mountain Province at 24,242 in 5,266 households as recorded by the National Statistics Office(2000). Kankanaey is the major toungue of the majority of the population. About 94% speak the dialect. The next langauge group, in point of number are those who speak Ilocano. |
