Of all the children of Abraham Strickler, 1st genealogists are most fortunate with records when it comes to Joseph Strickler, Sr. At an early date records of the family were kept by the Miley family whom Joseph Strickler had a close hand in aiding. Joseph Strickler appears to have been not unlike his neighbors just a simple farmer living a simple life. Joseph was relatively wealthy compared to other families but probably did not live a life of luxury. This life was not to be found in the then harsh environment of the Page Valley.

Joseph built his house on 55 acres of land granted him in 1756 land first surveyed for Abraham Strickler, Jr. In 1770 and 1771 Joseph still lived on this tract of land.

Who were Josephs parents?

The estate division of his father Abraham Strickler dated in 1747 and again in 1749 clearly shows that Joseph Strickler was indeed a son of Abraham Strickler, 1st.

Where and When was Joseph Strickler born?

According to early records kept by the Miley family and reported by Tobias Miley, Joseph Strickler was born 1 September 1731. Born in 1731, Josephs birth would have been on the Strickler farm in West Hempfield, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

Who Was Josephs wife?

As you may have noted, Joseph Strickler was married twice. Record of his second marriage to Barbara Harnish is found among the marriage records of Shenandoah County, Virginia.

No record of Josephs first marriage has been found. Tobias Miley reports he was married in early 1755 to Elizabeth Stickley, daughter of Johannes.  From researchers of the Stickley family this record appears to be correct. I cannot lay my the Stickley family document sent to me by Janet Holiday in 1995 that proves the connection. When I find it I will include it here.

12 June 1747, Joseph Strickler receives 102 acres of land, part of a 263-acre tract, his portion in the estate of his father Abraham Strickler decd.

19 Feb 1749, Joseph Strickler is again given the same 102 acres of land in a resurvey of the land dispersed from the estate of his father.

15 Sep 1749, Joseph Strickler aided the Johann Jacob Rothgeb family to settle land on Mill Creek in Page Co., VA, land patented to Rothgeb 15 September 1749. The tract of land was 400 acres and lay adjacent to the John Spitler farm. In 2000 I visited the Jessie Modisett farm, once land of Abraham Strickler, 3rd whose son Jacob married Anna Rothgeb. I was taken by tractor thru the field and shown one of the original corner post markings lain in place when the 400 acres of land was surveyed in 1749.

2 September 1755, Joseph Strickler is fined 10 shillings and 100 pounds of tobacco for missing two musters. He was of Frederick County, VA was court marshaled as a delinquent in the company of William Bethel, Captain of Foot.    Since the distinction of single man is not made for Joseph, as it was for others, it is assumed from this that he was indeed married by September 1755. This is consistent with the birth of his eldest daughter Dorothy born in late December 1756.

9 November 1756, Joseph Strickler is granted 55 acres of land beginning on the north side of the Shenandoah River by the mouth of a small branch.  This land was first surveyed in 1747 for Abraham Strickler (brother of Joseph) and was a portion of the 1033 acres of land granted their father. Abraham died in late 1754 and Joseph received Abrahams 55 acres of land that was adjacent to his own property.

This is the land that Joseph Strickler built his first home. He was still living on this tract of land as late as 1771 and probably even later than that.

19 May 1778, Joseph Strickler purchases 154 acres of land adjoining the west side of his existing land. c.c. Michael Roads and Samuel Strickler (of Benjamin).

23 March 1779, Joseph Strickler is deeded 154 acres of land on the westward side of the South River of the Shenandoah adjoining his own land.

1783, Joseph Strickler is enumerated in the Virginia State Census with a family of ten. The ten members of his household were: 1) Joseph 2) Barbara 3) Abraham 4) Anna Maria 5) Barbara 6) Anna 7) Margaret 8) Daniel 9-10) two unidentified persons (probably older children born between 1764 and 1773 who died between 1783 and 1785.

1785, Joseph Strickler is enumerated in the Virginia State Census with a family of ten. They are likely to be. 1) Joseph 2) Barbara 3) Abraham 4) Anna Maria 5) Barbara 6) Anna 7) Margaret 8) Daniel 9) Joseph 10) Catherine Strickler

Sep or Oct 1786, Joseph Strickler is named appraiser along with George Rothgeb and David Coffman, of the estate of Abraham Strickler decd. The estate was appraised at 572 pounds. John Hershberger, Abraham Spitler and Joseph Strickler all owed the estate.

22 February 1789, Joseph Strickler obtains 100 acres of land adjoining Benjamin Strickler, (from Benjamin Strickler?) part of the original 1,033-acre tract of his father Abraham decd.  This land was on the north side of the south-fork of the Shenandoah River and east of the White House and the White House Bridge.

9 September 1794, Joseph Strickler and wife Barbara sold the 100 acres obtained 22 February 1789 to Abraham Strickler, his oldest son. In 1794 Abraham Strickler began building his home there. It still stands high on the hill above the river. In 2000 I visited there and found the Adams Family then lived there. They had been doing some recent renovations there and found within the home the inscription A Strickler 1794, confirming in 1794 the house was built by Abraham. The family cemetery is located about 100 yards behind the house. Only a dozen or so stones are still visible. The land has been used for decades as a pasture. It is evident there are many more burials in this cemetery than there are visible stones. Some stones are said to be in the current barn and countless others are probably fallen and covered by years of soil.

23 April 1795, Joseph Strickler writes his will. It was signed sealed and delivered in the presence of John Strickler, John Roads and George Koontz. Joseph Strickler signed his name in German. The will mentions all 10 known children naming Margaret and Catherine as the youngest. He also mentions his wife Barbara and his neighbor Christina Swygart who he wishes to receive help if she is ever in need.

8 September 1795, Joseph Stricklers will is probated. Abraham Strickler qualifies as executor with Isaac Strickler and David Kauffman as sureties.
This page is only partially uploaded. It has been put here in its incomplete state so that the few descendants from this line that have contacted me can see a bit of what I am putting together and possibly forward more to me.
