Strickler Families of the World
Hans Jacob Strickler   c1704-c1782
Hans Jacob Strickler
Son of
Hans & Anna (Hiestand) Strickler
Born: 24 Mar 1704 in Germany possibly in or near Ibersheim
Died: 29 Jun 1782, Mt Joy Township, Lancaster Co., PA
Buried: Strickler Cemetery at Mt. Joy
Emigrated: arrived 3 Oct 1737 to Philadelphia from Rotterdam aboard the ship Charming Nancy
Married: c 1728 in Germany
Anna Catharina (Hiestand)
Daughter of Abraham or Heinrich Hiestand (unproved)
Born: c 1710 in or near Ibersheim, Germany
Died: c 1778, Mt. Joy Township, Lancaster Co., PA

Hans Jacob Strickler was a native of Germany who arrived in America in 1737. Little is known about Jacobs early life. He most likely was born in or near Ibersheim, Germany where Hans Strickler was deacon and later minister. The Strickler family often traveled to Amsterdam, Holland and to Friderichstadt in northern Germany near Denmark. If not born near Ibersheim Jacob could have been born at one of those locations. Jacobs occupation has never been determined however it is likely he was a simple farmer.

He arrived in America 3 October 1737 on the ship Charming Nancy. Also on board were his wife, several children, brother and sisters as well as dozens of other Mennonite families. This group of Mennonites probably departed the Ibersheim area in mid July1737. A short trip by boat down the Rhine River would have brought them to Amsterdam. They would have set sail after a few days in Amsterdam to fill out the proper paperwork and make payment for passage. The trip to America across the sea could take as long as 3 months.

Once in America and deborded at Philadelphia, Jacob made the five-day trek from Philadelphia to Lancaster Co., PA. He and his family probably stopped in West Hempfield to visit the other Strickler families that had settled there 10 years earlier and he probably stayed with them until he could find a farm of his own to rent or purchase. Jacob first took up land in what was then Donegal Twp but is now Rapho Twp. Jacob farmed 150 acres there until 1758 when he took up land in Mt. Joy Twp., Lancaster Co., PA and in 1763 was patented 210 acres there.

Jacob spent the remaining years of his life on his 210 acres of land in Mt. Joy. In 1779 Jacob deeded this land to his son Abraham Strickler. Jacob disappears from records after 1779 and apparently died in 1782.

Who were the parents of Hans Jacob Strickler?

Not unlike any other Mennonite family the Strickler family comes with its own set of problems when it comes to connecting immigrants to their parents. As with all of the Strickler immigrants we generally know who came to America and who was left in Germany. . Keep in mind that of all the early Strickler immigrants, NONE have a proven parental lineage. With that said by process of elimination experts in the family have been able to narrow down who the parents of each immigrant might be. In reality at this early date there are only two or three Strickler men who could be the father of all these immigrants. Hans Conrad Strickler lived in Friederichstadt, Germany. Because the Strickler family there became affiliated with the Frisian and Flemish congregations records for the family are plentiful. Hans Conrad Strickler did not have a son named Hans Jacob Strickler. Another Hans Jacob Strickler lived near Birkenauer, Germany. He died in 1726. He is believed to be the father of several other Strickler immigrants (including Abraham b.1714 and Andreas b. 1705) and he is also known to be the father of numerous other Stricklers who remained in Germany. One of those children who remained in Germany was Hans Jacob Strickler b. 1703, thus eliminating the possibility that Hans Jacob Strickler of Lancaster County was a son of Hans Jakob Strickler of Birkenaurhof. This leaves only one Strickler who could possibly be the father of Hans Jacob Strickler of Lancaster County and that would be Rev. Hans Strickler who resided near Ibersheim, Germany. (See the biography of Hans Strickler b.1669)

Hans Strickler married twice. His first wife was named Elsbeth. His second wife was named Anna. The maiden name of both women remains problematic. Records suggest that his first wife was Elsbeth Lhrer or Elsbeth Schneider. Records also suggest his second wife was Anna Hiestand. (See the bio of Hans Strickler b.1669) There is NO doubt that if Hans Jacob is the son of Hans Strickler then he is by the second marriage. Elsbeth died in 1697.

Conclusion: There is absolutely no concrete evidence linking Hans Jacob Strickler to a Strickler forefather, however circumstance allows us to conclude with reasonable certainty that he was a son of Hans Strickler of Ibersheim, Germany.

Who Was the Wife of Hans Jacob Strickler?

Very little is known about the wife of Hans Jacob Strickler. We know from the ship manifest that her name was Anna Catherina. Beyond this fact little can be proven. The leading theory is that she was a daughter or brother in another of the Charming Nancy immigrant families. One such family, the Hiestand family, has long been suspected to be the connecting family with Anna Catharina. Evidence shows that Abraham Hiestand, Heinrich Hiestand and Conrad Hiestand each had a daughter who was born about 1710 and who had married before 1730. Descendants of these families immigrated with the Stricklers in 1737.

When Did Jacob and Catherine Die?

When Samuel Goff Stern owned the Strickler house at Mt Joy he found a bound booklet of information regarding burials in the Strickler cemetery near Mt. Joy. Included on this list was a Jacob Strickler died 28 June 1782 aged 78 yrs 3 months and 4 days and a Catherine Strickler died 1778, aged abt 68. If these dates and ages were correct then they would be the deaths of Hans Jacob Strickler and Anna Catherine Strickler. The notebook held by Stern in 1922 cannot be located and likely was sold at the family auction in the late 1920s. Mrs. Milbourne oft expressed her disappointment in not procuring the document in her trips to the Mt. Joy area.

Other than the undocumented notebook entries the only other indication about Hans Jacob Strickler is that he was alive and well in September 1779 and at that time appeared to be widowed.

Who Were the Children of Hans Jacob Strickler?

Perhaps the most important aspect of Jacobs life to be researched is the identifications of his children. Unfortunately Jacob left few documents naming children.

Child Directly Proven by Records:

1) Abraham Strickler b. 18 Dec 1738 d. 4 Apr 1821; in a deed dated 13 Sep 1779 Hans Jacob Strickler of Mt. Joy Twp. sells 210 acres of land to his son Abraham Strickler.

C
hildren Indirectly Proven by Deeds or Tax Records:

1) Heinrich Strickler b. 18 Aug 1729 d. 14 May 1796; in a deed dated 10 Feb 1763 Abraham Strickler of Rapho sells to his brother Heinrich Strickler of Rapho 34 acres of land. 1757 Henry Strickler is taxed in Donegal residing with or beside of Hans Jacob Strickler.
2) Ulrich Strickler b. 30 Jan 1734 d. 2 Nov 1804; in 1757 taxed in Donegal twp. residing beside Henry, Abraham and Hans Jacob Strickler.

Other Probable Children of Hans Jacob Strickler based on location:

1) Anna Barbara Strickler b. 10 Oct 1744 d. 29 Jun 1811; buried in the Strickler cemetery in Mt. Joy; burial there indicated she is probably a daughter of Hans Jacob Strickler.; Another Anna Barbara Strickler is also buried in the Strickler cemetery (19 Sep 1747-20 May 1784) This second Anna Barbara Strickler is believed to be the wife of Johannes Strickler because her name appeared after Johns in the cemetery listing while Barbara born in 1744 appeared near Jacob and Catherine.
2) Johannes Strickler b. 17 Sep 1741 d. 5 Oct 1784; buried in the Strickler cemetery indicating he is probably a son of Hans Jacob Strickler.

Possible Children of Hans Jacob Strickler with absolutely no evidence:

1) Maria Magdalena Strickler b. c 1730-36; she married in York Co., PA to Matthias Detter; Her age and location indicates she is a daughter of Conrad Strickler not of Jacob Strickler. No evidence links her to either Strickler. Other sources indicate her name may have been Stricker and not Strickler.
2) Hans Jacob Strickler b. c 1749; lived in Dauphin Co., PA; his name suggests he may be connected to the Hans Jacob Strickler family of Mount Joy. There is considerable confusion as to if he was even a Strickler. His wife was Dorothea. He had a son Valentine. Jacobs name is written Strikler and it has been suggested that his real name was Streigler or Stricker, thus explaining his disappearance from records after Valentine was baptized in 1774. He may be the Jacob Strickler who was the father of Jacob Strickler b. c1779.
3) Elizabeth Strickler b. c 1757 d. c 1843; The wife of Christian Landes (b. 1756) has long been suspected to be a Strickler by maiden name. However no evidence has been given to prove her maiden name. Assuming that Elizabeth was a Strickler, her birth year would make Jacobs wife Catherine about 47-48 years old when Elizabeth was born, probably eliminating Jacob and Catherine as the parents of Elizabeth. Since Elizabeth resided in Windsor Twp., York Co., PA it is most likely she would be part of the York County families connected there to Conrad or Ulrich Stricklers descendants.
4) David Strickler b. 7 Dec 1756 d. 14 Jan 1843; He is often called the son of Jacob Strickler of Lancaster Co. a fact that is physically impossible (see bio of David for explanation). All we know for certain is that David was from Lancaster Co. and died in Fayette Co., PA. The descendants of Conrad Strickler of York moved to Fayette Co. in mass. None of Henry Stricklers (of Hempfield) immediate descendants went to Fayette Co. David could possibly be of the Rapho families however any connection to them cannot be established.

Henry Strickler immigrated to America as a young man with his parents from near Ibersheim, Germany, where his grandfather, Hans Strickler, a Swiss immigrant, was minister until his death in early 1737. Henry Strickler was a well-known and highly respected farmer. We can tell this by the large number of people whom he represented or witnessed to important events in their lives. In his life Henry was able to accumulate great wealth holding large portions of real estate in Rapho and Mt. Joy Townships. From the 1750s until his death Henry was known to keep a detailed journal and diary. Many family events are recorded there as well as his many business transactions or debts.

Henrys wife was Maria Boehm. Her father died in 1780 and records thereafter mention his daughter Maria Strickler wife of Heinrich Strickler of Rapho Twp. Maria and Henry would have 6 known children. As with all of these early families there could likely have been more children that died young.

6) Magdalena Strickler b. 9 Sep 1766 d. aft 1797 md Peter Thomas; NFR

Little research has been done by this researcher and compiler on the descendants of the daughters of Henry Strickler, 1st. I cant even imagine how many descendants there are. What little work that has been done on the daughter Anna has already turned up several hundred descendants and the work there has just begun.

Hannes Schmidt (John Smith) and John Shellenberger, miller, both of Rapho Twp. 150 acres for 300 pounds land from Joseph Shirk and John (Furry (Forry, Ferree etc.). Executor Henry Strickler. This record appears to be a record for Henry Strickler the 1727 immigrant who lived in Hempfield Twp. His sons in law were John Smith and Joseph Shirk. His neighbor in Hempfield was John Shellenberger who also is a Strickler descendant. I forgot to write the date of this deed down it appears in records I wrote down from 1760 to 1768 and is located in Lancaster DB M p. 39 (page 450 is 1768 so it seems that 39 would be nearer 1760)
31 Aug 1762 Henry Strickler is named in a deed between John Beatty and Bersheba his wife to James Sterrett of Rapho Township. Henry is a witness as well as a neighbor of Sterrett and Beatty. The deed was recorded 20 Nov 1762 (W47, W88, J 40 Writs) (DB H p.476)

3 Apr 1789 Henry Strickler writes his will and registers it in the court of Lancaster Co., PA. He mentions six children but curiously only gives the husband of one of his daughters, Ann. The others were clearly married before 1789. He also mentions his brother Ulrich Strickler and Ulrichs son John Strickler. He named his son Henry Strickler and John Horst as executors. His administers were Henry Strickler and Henry Neff. He left 800 pounds to be equally divided amongst his five daughters. The farm was to go to his son Henry.

Abraham Strickler, Sr.
Son of Hans Jacob &Anna Catherina (Hiestand) Strickler
Born: 18 December 1738, Donegal Twp., Lancaster Co., PA
Died: 4 April 1821, Mt. Joy Township, Lancaster Co., PA
Buried: Stricklers Cemetery 2 mi east of Elizabethtown, Mt. Joy Twp., Lancaster Co., PA
Married: by March 1764, Rapho Twp., Lancaster Co., PA

Catherina Rohrer

Daughter of Jacob & Anna ( mnu ) Rohrer
Born: 10 July 1746, Lancaster Co., PA
Died: 6 September 1813, Mt. Joy Township, Lancaster Co., PA
Buried: Stricklers Cemetery 2 mi east of Elizabethtown, Mt. Joy Twp., Lancaster Co., PA

Abraham Strickler was by trade a farmer. He was a faithful Mennonite. He moved to Mt. Joy Twp. when his father took up land there in 1758. Abraham took over his fathers farm and in 1779 the farm was deeded to him. Abraham married before March 1764 when he appears in a court docket being called the wife of Catherina Rohrer, daughter of Jacob Roher decd. Catherine was born in 1746 so it is likely that she and Abraham married no earlier than 1763. Abrahams oldest daughter was born in late 1764 suggesting Abraham and Catherine were married about January 1764.

Tax records show that Abraham and Catherine had a modest farm with several horses and a dozen or so cattle. Abraham and Catherine had six children who grew to adulthood. Abraham left a will in which he specifically mentions four of his children. The majority of his farm went to his son John. There was located a very old cemetery on the Strickler farm. Burials began there as early as 1778 and continued into the 1860s. The cemetery sat in a field. The farm left the Strickler family and was sold several times before Samuel Stern purchased it. In the 1920s he took up the cemetery stones and piled them in a pile under a tree. Details of the Strickler cemetery follow below.

In the 1920s several Stricklers visited Stern. He showed them several stones including one transcribed to say ----iam Strickler born 10 July 1746 died 6 September 1813. Somehow the family concluded this was Mariam Strickler wife of Abraham. There is no evidence that Abrahams wife was named Mariam. An old notebook found by Stern in the Strickler home recorded the burials in the cemetery. No record for a Mariam is found however a record for Catharinam Strickler bearing the same dates of 10 July 1746 and 6 September 1813 is found there.

Children of Abraham Strickler:

1) Barbara Strickler b. c Nov 1764 d. aft 1846; married George or Joseph Barnhard

4) Abraham Strickler, Jr. b. 27 May 1769 d. 14 Apr 1860; He received 100 acres of land from his father. Abraham has not been found in records after 1816. I have not checked tax records after 1816. Abraham is mentioned in 1746 in his sisters will. He may be the Abraham Strickler who died 14 April 1860 in Fayette Co., PA at the age of 90 yrs and 17 days.
5) Anna Strickler b. 7 Jul 1770 d. 12 Feb 1846; buried in Stricklers Cemetery; never married; left a will in which she names her sister Barbara Barnhart and brothers John and Abraham; Jacob is deceased.

1780 Abraham Strickler is taxed in Mt. Joy Township. He is incorrectly listed as owning 200 acres not 210. For many years he is taxed with 200 acres when records clearly show that the whole time he held 210 acres.
1781-1800 Abraham Strickler is taxed at Mt. Joy on 200 acres of land.
