Why I decided to do Lab 2

by Eric Davies

Why indeed! Well, it all came about because eventually Labyrinth of The Blud Devils had finally been completed, edited with sound and effects the lot. So, after the premiere of the movie, everyone had said what a wonderful experience it had all been and when could we do it again?
By now, technology had moved on and we had new equipment thanks to Mr Mike Hardman, to try out. It was talked about whenever we met up. When are we going to film something again? No one seemed bothered about the fact that someone had to start the ball rolling by formulating a script and locations. I took it upon myself to write a small script that would utilise similar locations with the same people but with new equipment. Okay, it sounds like a rehash of Lab 1, as it has become known, but what the hell. It was something to do on a Sunday.

I had always fancied the idea of making a complete film in one day. It would be tough, but if I could write something that they couldnt disagree with too much then, it should be quite easy. Yeah, right! With the characters of the Doc and Tramp already fleshed out, all I had to do was try and throw in a few sound and site gags and get everyone together.
People think its easy making a film. It can be if you can rely on other people to help you along but mainly its down to one person holding everything together as I found out.
Crew was easy. Basically Mike Hardman as cameraman, seeing as it was his equipment, and wed get anyone along for the ride as boom operator. Locations were easy as well. Up on the moors near Rivington and a few Bolton town centre locations. This was before the days of Sunday opening and the town centre would be quiet. Cast was easy as well because everyone was very keen. Well, they had asked to do some more filming after all! A Script was written and Labyrinth of The Blud Devils Part Two was born!

On location at Bolton Bus station

Now, could we do it in one day? If everyone turned up, the weather was with us and there werent too many retakes then yes! A day was picked when everyone could make it and filming commenced. Many hours later it was in the can, as they say in filming circles. In the can for the actors maybe. Next came the task of editing it together, using Mikes new gismo, adding sound effects and making sure that the sound matched the action. A few technical tricks were thrown in for good measure as well.
We used everything we had at our disposal in this film. It worked wonderfully and I was very pleased with the outcome. Of course it could have been better. Of course we should have done this and that. Imagine what we could do now if wed had the technology. I like to think that whatever we do is done to the best of our ability at that particular moment in time. Theres no point going back to it and re-doing it, as wed probably have never got past Lab 1. Ian Taylor created a direction out of adversity and circumstance. I carried on in that same direction. Next would be a culmination of what we had learned, accomplished and achieved so far. Was the world ready for Labyrinth of The Blud Devils Part Three - The Butlers Revenge!?!?
