Day 2 - Setting off I slept under the stars last night, walked a few hundred feet from camp and unrolled the sleeping bag on the reg (flat sandy desert). Stars very bright, a lot more visible than from home and it's obvious how much further south we are with the plane of the ecliptic very high in the sky. Cold in the early morning even with the thermals and a three season bag, burrowed down in the sleeping bag and pulled the drawstring tight.

Woke before sunrise, watched the light hit the Jebel Bani range to the west then the sun rise over the dunes. Breakfast of porridge and omelette then broke camp and set off over reg at about 9:00, for the first full day's walking. Quite easy going on flat ground but it soon reached 30 degrees. We stopped for a couple of hours midday with some shade from a tamarind tree A chance to take the boots off and dry the socks, and the usual lunch of tomato, cucumber, onion, green pepper and tinned fish or cold meat.

Also a chance to refill the water from the supplies carried on the camels. A mix of reg and small dunes in the afternoon but I was surprised to see camp ahead before 4:00, and arrived to a refreshing glass of mint tea. Despite the heat the distance didn't seem too far, but the surface was good and we could settle into a steady rhythm and enjoy the walking. A few people have minor blisters already, glad my boots are well worn in. Camp is on a flat area surrounded by dunes, sleep on the sand tonight I think.
