| Day 3 - It's getting warmer Slept the other side of some low dunes from camp, couldn't see camp or any other sleeping bags and lay out looking at the stars. Could have been totally alone in the desert, very peaceful and relaxing. The night wasn't as cold, I'd added an extra layer and was a bit too warm for a lot of the night, but was too comfortable to crawl out of the bag to remove a layer! Woke to complete silence, could hear the gentle whoosh of a bird gliding overhead. When the sun came up over the dunes the temperature picked up rapidly. Packed the sleeping bag in early morning sun as the shadows of the low dunes shrunk, lots of beetle tracks had appeared overnight and a small burrow a few feet away. Checked the boots and shook out the clothes, but the local wildlife leaves you alone if you don't bother it and it would be a bonus to see anything. |

| Set off at 9:00 across good flat ground but reached some small dunes mid morning then onto hamada, flat rocky ground scattered with stones up to fist size so you have to watch your footing. A few fossil bellomnites were spotted. Stopped for lunch in the shade of a Tamarind tree at the edge of the hamada, temperature now around 35 degrees so a break of a couple of hours was welcome. Someone found a small camel-spider, just an inch across but a nasty looking thing. Not strictly a spider, body more like a scorpion but no tail or pincers, an impressive set of jaws instead. They grow up to three or four inches and are quite aggressive but they aren't poisonous, just a nasty bite. | |||||||||||

| This afternoons walking was over low dunes, soft underfoot and very hot. I think everyone was glad to see camp ahead at about 4:30, on a flat area between a rocky bluff and some large dunes. The usual glass of mint tea on arriving at camp, then climbed the biggest dune to watch the sunset. I'm writing this at 9:00 sitting outside in shorts and t-shirt, well after dark but it still feels warm. It seems to be getting warmer. I have one small blister, but nothing to bother about. Some people are limping along on feet encased in compeed already. I was flagging a bit this afternoon but everyone seems in high spirits now, and nobody has been consigned to the camels yet. I'll sleep out on the dunes again tonight. p.s. Now late at night - the Berbers lit a camp fire and with a few drums (and a bit of improvisation with cooking pots and jerry cans) played and sung Berber songs. Only about eight of us joined in, which seemed a bit of a shame, but we had some fun singing and dancing round the camp fire. A nomad camped nearby heard the music and turned up to watch, he seemed to find out efforts highly amusing! |
