| Exmouth, Western Australia July 2000 Believe it or not, I think this is the only place I�ve stayed in which begins with �E�. We travelled overnight on the North-West Coastal Highway down from Port Hedland, heading for the Ningaloo Reef. Unlike the strip of resorts serving the Great Barrier Reef on the other side, the western coast is unpopulated and rugged. The bus stopped at a roadhouse, again in the middle of nowhere, at 3am, from where a minibus took us the hour or so to the village of Exmouth on the coast. Since the bus company was in serious debt, the minibus driver demanded payment, contrary to the expectations of the handful of travellers stranded without cash but after several negotiations we eventually made it to Exmouth and stayed �half a night� at the village resort. Twelve hours later we were on the local bus to Ningaloo. It�s a very slow, long-winded way to get where you want to go. And it was even slower getting out� |
