| "Rise Up and Walk" came from a blend of my love for seventies Funk music and a series of Sunday Teaching Service teachings from the summer of 2000, in which the former president of The Way International, Rev. L. Craig Martindale, taught on the first century believers in Acts. "Rise Up and Walk" focuses on Acts Chapters 2, 3, and 4. The first verse refers to the first teaching of the Grace Administration (Acts 2). Peter teaches the people of the events that led to the day of Pentecost, ending with Acts 2:38 "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit". In that day, about three thousand souls were saved as recorded in Acts 2:41. The second verse refers to the record in Acts 3:1-9 about the lame man who believed so much to be healed that he had people carry him to the temple every single day for over forty years (Acts 4:22). (My father always makes a joke about why it took so long for the man to get healed. It was because he asked for an 'alm' instead of a leg!) Peter and John realized this man's great believing so they taught the Word to him and, by the power of God, were able to heal this man so he could walk again. The third verse refers to the events that followed after the lame man was healed. (Acts 3:10 -- Acts 4:30) The people, who had been used to seeing this man lying outside the temple every day, were astonished to find that he was walking and leaping and praising God. Peter, seeing an opportunity to speak the Word, spoke the truth to them concerning Jesus Christ. The Sanhedrin, who acted as the ruling body of Israel and who were also responsible for the death of Jesus Christ, were enraged by these teachings and threatened Peter and John to never speak in the name of Jesus Christ again. Undaunted by this, the two disciples went back to their household and continued teaching in the name of Jesus Christ despite the threatenings. They taught the Word with vigor and enthusiasm to anyone who would hear it from this point on and would not let any persecution stand in their way. In Acts 4:24 - 30, the household prays to God for the boldness to continue walking in God's word. The chorus is a paraphrase of the prayer recorded in Acts 4:24 - 30 and is used as the major tie-in between the verses. When Peter told the people on the day of Pentecost to "Repent", he wanted them to get out of their old man ways by laying aside all of the doubt, fear and worry out of their lives. When Peter and John healed the man who was lame from his mother's womb, they taught him not to doubt in God's word and told him that by Jesus Christ's name, he will have the power to rise up and walk. Finally, the disciples prayed to God that they would have all boldness, that they would not be intimidated by the threatenings and sayings of men, and that they would be spiritually able to rise above all obstacles and walk in the way of abundance and power. |
