Chapter 2

I was just getting off the phone with Julie, the manager of my sanctuary, when I heard Jessica come in the front door.

Mom? Where are you?

Im coming. I walked from the kitchen into the family room and gave Jessica a big hug. I stepped back and looked at her. You get prettier every time I see you.

I could tell I embarrassed her, but didnt really care. I felt as though that was a mothers job. Taking my attention away from Jessica, I looked over at her new beau. At first glance, I could find nothing wrong with him and I could definitely see what first attracted her to him. He was a very nice looking man with dark blonde hair and beautiful blue eyes. Give it time, give it timeIll find something.

Hello Mrs. Day. He held out his hand as if I was actually going to take it.

I knocked his hand away and gave him a welcome hug. Good to meet you Brandon. And its Lynn. Mrs. Day just makes me sound so old.

Okay. He looked at Jessica with a questioning looks as if asking her what he should do from here.

She started laughing. Well mom, you arent exactly a spring chicken anymore.

I looked over at her with all the pretend shock I could muster. Well, I never! You and Brandon go sit on the back porch and Ill be out in a minute with some drinks. Is iced tea okay with you Brandon?

Yes MrsLynn. Jessica grabbed his hand and led him to the back door. Noticing the dogs at the window trying to get in to greet the new arrival, Jessica looked back at me. Mom, why couldnt you have tied them up or something?

You know how I feel about that. My house, my ruleslive with it. Now go.

I got the drinks ready, went outside, and sat down. Jessica was sitting in a chair watching Brandon in the middle of the back yard playing with the dogs. Well, the dogs seem to like him, right now I guess thats enough for me.

We sat there for several minutes talking about our lives and our workwhich seemed to be one in the same for both of us. Brandon finally got worn out and came to join us. He grabbed a drink and sat down. Youve got some great dogs there, Lynn.

Yeah, Im pretty happy with them. So, tell me. Where did you two meet?

Jessica and Brandon glanced at one another and shared a smile. He came into the hospital with a torn tendon.

Sports? I asked looking at him.

Yes. I was playing basketball with my dad and well, lets just say I went down pretty quickly. Jessica helped heal me up in no time though.

Im sure she did. Tell me about yourself Brandon.

Well, I grew up in Georgia and moved here up to Kentucky with my dad when he and my mom got a divorce. I was 17 at the time. I then went to UK and got my bachelors in teaching. Ive been teaching at Tates Creek in Lexington ever since graduation.

What do you teach?

Im the choir director. My dad is a music producer and I guess I inherited his love for music.

We sat there and talked about anything and everything that came to mind for the next couple of hours. Periodically, Brandon would get up and start to wrestle with one or all the dogs. It was getting late and they still had almost an hour drive ahead of them, so I walked them to the door.

Ill meet you in the car, Brandon.

Okay. It was nice meeting you Lynn.

Nice meeting you too Brandon.

Once Brandon was out the door, Jessica shut it and looked at me accusingly. Well, let me have it.

I can honestly say that I really like him. Seeing the look on her face made me laugh. Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later.

Thats good mom. Because you know what? This is the man that Im going to marry, I just know it!

With that, she left me standing there in shock and walked out the door shutting it behind her. Marriage? How can she be thinking about marriage? She is still so young and they havent known each other that long!
