Health, Always With A Competitive Attitude:
          Sport Karate

For many years I have been applying the
principles of the Yin and Yang and the Elements
through learning and teaching Martial Arts.  I
Practice a style of martial arts called "Goyu Ryu."
A form of sport karate I learned from Master
Arron Banks, a promoter and martial artist at the
"New York Karate Academy," early in 1964.
At fourteen years young, I took up karate for
the sport and to protect myself when the need arise.
I began learning the practice of a style of unarmed
combat.  A traditional fighting system which as of
today I still practice as a form of exercise, and
taught at various karate schools in Queens and
Long Island, in New York, Years back in my early
days.

As well as from side to side and aiming from
outside in and inside straight on (just as in
electricity in alternating current, not direct
current).  In using this understanding of the Yin /
Yang in karate, teaching and in sharing this art to
the young and the older adults, in a form of a
dance or aerobics, one can experience the
tremendous advances in their movements
(Kinesthesiology), and its benefits to health.  As
well as the five elemental energies which
transform, manifest and maintain our own natural
equilibrium through an automatic system of
checks and balances based on the curative and
creatively controlled cycles, like the mother-son
victor-vanquished relationships (as in fear you
fight or flight).
These elemental energy cycles, which remain in
constant flux inside and outside of us, modulate
the dynamics of the polar force fields (Chi/Life
force) in which energies move, manifest and trans-
forms (example from weak to strong, sickness to
health, or well being).  As when by administering
herbs and formulas whose governing elemental
energies have specific natural affinity for the
ailing organs and it's associated energy channel.
The herbalist like the Martial artist utilizes the
creative and controlled cycles of the five elemental
energies to stimulate or sedate, increase or
decrease, generate or subjugate; otherwise balance
and harmonizes the vital energies involved in
regulating human health.
In conjunction with my application of the Yin /
Yang, and the elementals, I follow the first rule of
karate; daily spiritual attitude, that is to built on
health with wholesome natural nutrition, exercise,
rest, give service to others (job or career), and
avoid self or impose external conflict.  At the
moment of crisis, the most important thing of self
defense is to keep cool.  Your opponent, or
be it disharmony or dis-ease, etc., in a similar
situation is likely to lose control of it self, and
when you simply watch, study what he or it does,
and how he or it moves, you will be able to find the
weakness or weak spot in his technique, or
direction of its movement and counter attack with
the appropriate technique, remedies and cure.
For this reason, in daily practice always aim
for calmness, speed and accurate application of
technique, or appropriate medicine for a particular
ailment.  Remember a successful fighter is one
who has learned to select correctly the cures of Raw
Materials or Tools of strike, etc., he has been
taught.  A final note: As always, A Martial Artist
Before he attempts to "Over Kill," He Must most
of all learns to "Heal." By: J. A. Ojeda

The  Goyu style is one that employs low stances,
with fast circular arm techniques.  A Blending of the
strong snap techniques of the Okinawan style
strikes, and the dynamic and free techniques of the
soft Chinese Kempo (sword fighting / fencing).  As I
was taught the Chinese philosophy, etc.  I began to
understand for the fist time the creative "Cycles,"
that it is one of generation and stimulation of the
Yin/Yang and the five elementals energies of "Chi."
For example; Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and
Water, which encompass all the myriad phenomena
of nature and equally to humans.  As functional
manifestation of the Yin and Yang and the Elemental
Energies are the Fundamental Forces of nature
whose constant transformation and interactions
make the world go around, not only Goyu, but in all
systems of Karate.  I learned the strange and
intricate patterns displayed.  The Hard and Soft of
the Yin/Yang approach (the opposites and /or doing
the opposite).
The word "Goyu" means hard and soft, "GO" is
the Japanese word for Hardness and "JU"  is the
word for Stiffness.  The system is base on an oriental
concept that all hardness and stiffness is not good. At
the same time all softness and too much gentleness
is not good.  The two should complement each other
(Balanced).  Combining the two gives Goyu Ryu (Ryu
means School) karate its beautiful disciplined
movements, filled with grace, flowing forms (Forms
means Kata a synchronized group of technique in a
form of a dance), and strength.  Actions are some
times extremely fast and other slow and majestic.
Goyu Ryu relies on an aggressive style of attack with
emphasis on delivering blows "Hard" but with easy
effort and rapid succession, Maneuvering not only
forwards and backwards.
