| Have you ever heard of the phrase, what goes around comes around? That is what the Hydrologic Cycle is all about. We are using the same water that was here a million or even a billion years ago. The ocean consist of 92% of the water on Earth. Some are frozen, in reservoirs and in the air (clouds). The water in the ocean is toxic to people and to most of the creatures on land. So mother nature developed this wonderful process called the Hydrologic Cycle (Water Cycle). During the process, the water gets clean along the way and some are stored in lakes, ponds, and other reservoir, where we can access it. Human activities in the past decades have greatly affected the rates of infiltration . Activities such as grazing, cultivation, and city developments, like road pavements have greatly reduced the rate of infiltration and have increased the surface runoff. Having more surface runoff means less water that goes down to recharge the groundwater supply. Having more runoff also means more flood and more polluted water. Because of the increase of polluted water, the humans develop the "Water Treatment Plant". It does the same process during the infiltration in hydrologic cycle but the process is faster. |
