| The M91 | ||||||||
| The M91 was the first Russian smokeless powder cartridge rifle issued to the Tsar's troops. The Rifle replaced the Berdan rifles in Russian service. The magazine was designed by Leon Nagant of Belgium, while the rifle itself was designed by Russian Colonel Sergei Mosin. The Rifle was adopted in 1891 and was designated "3 line rifle Model 1891" "Line" is the equivalent of 1/10 of an inch. The M91 was produced at the arsenals of Izhevsk, Tula, and Sestroyesk in Russia, and produced under contract by Chatterault in France and the Remington and New England Westinghouse in the USA. The M91 was widely used in WWI, and not as widely in WWII. Many European nations captured or bought large amounts of M91 rifles, including Finland, Germany, Austria, Estonia, Turkey, and Poland amoung them. Many of the US made M91s never went to Russia, and many were sold to civilians or converted into ROTC training rifles in 30-06 caliber. These rifles may be unsafe to shoot, and should be bought as wall-hangers only. |
