| Synopsis: Digimon Tamers is the third season of Digimon, and it does not take place in the same timeline as the other two. In this story, "Digimon" itself is a popular card game, not a fantasy realm discovered by kids. There is an actual Digital World filled with the monsters, but it was created by programmers, the emperor Yamaki, and his group. When Takato, a 10-year old BIG fan of Digimon finds a strange blue card in his collection box, it opens the link between the fluke realm that the programmers created and the real world, cascading "fake" digimon into reality. Takato, Henry, and Rika, who call themselves the Tamers, each obtain a Digimon when it emerges into the Real World, becoming friends among theirselves and their Digimon. And when not-so-kind Digimon serving the Sovereign come to wreak havoc in the city as well, it can only be destiny that these three will stop it Takato himself is your typical 5th grade card-collecting obsessee, but his addiction to the game is balanced by his childish charm. Guilmon, his partner, is fairly simple-minded, but very loyal. All he seems to want in life is a day in the park, and some peanut butter. Henry is a stalwart, mature boy with deep qualms about both fighting and the existence of these "fictional" beings in the real world. This causes clashes with his Digimon, Terriermon, aptly named for his playful but snappish attitude and desire for a good fight. Rika, a polar opposite of Henry, uses her privelege to its fullest, a tomboy to the max, and a fighter to the brim, she trains with gusto, and a cold steel resolve. This saddens her graceful Digimon, Renamon, who is eager to go any length to please Rika, but wants friendship in return, receiving none. Other characters include Calumon, a sweet-hearted Digimon who holds the power for other Digimon to evolve and emerge in the real world, Impmon, a devillish creature who detests humans and loves to fight battles that he never wins. Kazu and Kenta, digimon fanatical friends of Takato's, and Jeri, a social little girl with a dark and tragic past. The story develops further with a trip into the Digital World, more "Tamers" joining the team, and the numerous new Digimon characters that all hold a part in the strange plot. All in all, a fun, sweet story...until the angry Sovereign, a grudge-holding Digimon named Beelzemon, and an odd, unfathomable force start causing trouble, making this season well-renowned as the most dramatic, most violent, and most popular in America in its first air. (Although, because of the overly serious content, it was very much rejected in its native Japan.) This season is very different from the others, so, just from my POV, if your tired of the stereotypical "Pika-pika" of anime, just give this one a try. |
