Wide Area Network (WAN) : WAN is network that covers a large geograpichal area located within a country side and
worldwide networks such as city, country , or the world
: WAN using a communications channel that combines many type of media such as
telephone lines, cable and radio waves .
: The internet is the world's largest WAN.

Area of Coverage : WANs is a large gteographical area located within a countryside and worldwide networks such as
                                                  city,country and world.
Ownership : WANs have no ownership .

                       Types of Wan

1 . Enterprise Private Network (EPN)
Type of network build by an interprise to interconnect various campony site ,
e.g. production site, head offices, remote offices, shops, in order to share
                                                                                      computer resources

2 . Virtual Private Network (VPN)
Type of private network built over public infrastructure . By using a
number of security mechanisme , including encryption, a VPN allows user
to securely access a network from different locations using a public telecommunication
                                                                         network, most frequently the internet.

Advantages
Disadvantages
  • Messages can be sent very quickly to anyone else on the network
  • Sharing data or information is private and confidential. These are similar to those of LAN's except the scale of sharing etc, become far greater and can be worldwide
  • Again these are similar to those of LAN's except that issues such as security become even more important as potential heckers could break into a computer system from anywhere in the world rather than having to physically be in abuilding
  • Encryption of secure darta such as financial transaction is necessary because it is even easier to capture data.
