                           PATHS TO GIVING
Shriners Hospitals for Children is a twenty-two hospital pediatric healthcare system that
strives to provide world-class, compassionate hospital and medical care at no charge to
children with orthopaedic disabilities, burn injuries and spinal cord injuries.

The forty-bed Canadian Shriners Hospital each year provides inpatient care for some
1,000 children and sees more than 7,500 outpatient clinic visits.  Research and medical
training are also an inportant part of Shriners Hospitals' mission.  The research program
at our Montreal hospital is funded by Shriners Hospitals.

The following information is intended to serve as an aid to those who wish to help in this
great mission.  This information should not be interpreted as legal, tax or financial advice.
Please seek the advice of your own attorney and tax advisor to decide if any of these ways
of giving are right for you.
Present Gifts
CASH  This is the simplest, and often the best, way to give. You benefit through a receipt
for the full amount, and this is an immediate tax savings.  The amount that you may claim
as a charitable deduction for tax purposes has been recently increased to 75% of the donor's
taxable income. The new 75 percent rate applies to all donations, including those to a charity
such as the Shriners Hospitals.

APPRECIATED PROPERTY  This is similar to cash gifts, but involves other forms of
property, such as securities or real estate.  There are special tax considerations if the
property has increased in value - appreciated - since you bought it.   The capital gains
tax has been recently reduced by half on any publicly traded equities (stocks or bonds)
that are donated to a charity such as the Shriners Hospitals.

LIFE INSURANCE (cash value) Ownership of a life insurance policy may be transferred to
Shriners Hospitals after purchase or, in the case of a new policy, one may be purchased
naming Shriners Hospitals as owner on the application form. You are entitled to an initial
tax receipt for the cash surrender value of the policy transferred and annual tax receipts for
the premium amounts donated in each calendar year.
Deferred Gifts
Shriners Hospitals for Children has members of its
Endowments, Wills and Gifts Committee located throughout Canada.
These volunteers are available to discuss the ways of giving with you
on a confidential basis.  For more information you may call, toll-free
