Research and medical training are also an inportant part of Shriners Hospitals' mission. The research program at our Montreal hospital is funded by Shriners Hospitals. The following information is intended to serve as an aid to those who wish to help in this great mission. This information should not be interpreted as legal, tax or financial advice. Please seek the advice of your own attorney and tax advisor to decide if any of these ways of giving are right for you. |
| Deferred Gifts |
| BEQUESTS This is a simple and flexibla way to ensure assets are used the way you want them to be after your death. If you have a will, you can easily add a codicil making a bequest to Shriners Hospital. "I give to Shriners Hospitals for Children, a Canadian Corporation, the sum of $ ____ to be used for its general purposes." You may give any asset you wish. Your estate benefits from a receipt for the full value of the bequest. GIFTS of RESIDUAL INTEREST With this kind of gift, you transfer property - usually your principal residence - irrevocably to Shriners Hospitals, but retain its use for your lifetime and your spouse's as well. When the transfer is made, you get a receipt for the present value of the property our charity will ultimately receive, based upon factors such as its appraised value and your age. LIFE INSURANCE (death proceeds) You may name Shriners Hospitals as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy, resulting in a significant future gift. However, no tax credit may be claimed upon death unless the proceeds are paid into the estate and the funds are donated through the donor's will. CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY This method provides both a gift to Shriners Hospitals and a guaranteed fixed annual income for life to you or your spouse. The size of the annual payment depends on the size of your gift and on your age when you make it. A significant portion of annuity payments to you may be tax-free. CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUSTS With this gift, you transfer cash or property (stocks, real estate) to a trust. You retain income from the trust for life or for a specified number of years, at the end of which the trust principal becomes your gift to Shriners Hospitals. You receive a donation receipt in the year you make your gift. You may also benefit through trustee management of the asset as well as by removal of the property from your taxable estate. |
