Challenges, Combat, and Special Rules
Ability Benefits
When making a challenge, you may add one appropriate Ability to the number of Traits you are bidding. Doing this costs one Ability trait if the challenge fails. This is in addition to any retest bids. You do not have to add the Ability if you don't want to.

Example : Burt is in a fist fight. He can add his 5 Brawl to his 10 Physical traits for a total bid of 15 traits. If he succeeds, there is no loss. If he fails, he loses one trait for the rest of the night and is down to 4 Brawl in the next round.

Defensive Combat
A character in combat may add Dodge to his bid in addition to any other appropriate Ability. However, if the challenge is successful, no damage is done to the opponent. The character is concentrating solely on defense, not attack. If the challenge is unsuccessful, he will lose one point of Dodge OR one point of the another Ability. Dodge can be bid without another Ability.

Mass Combat
Up to four characters may attack a single opponent at once in melee or brawling combat. Any number may attack in ranged combat. The opponent may select which character he is resisting. If the opponent wins, that character takes damage. All other characters may challenge normally, but do not receive damage if they lose. Note that some abilities and Disciplines (like Celerity or spending Blood) may allow for resisting multiple opponents.

Automatic Successes
A character may spend a Willpower for an automatic success in a challenge. The opponent may canceled by spending a Willpower, or can retest, but not both. A character may not spend more than one Willpower per round.

Unskilled Actions
You do not have to spend a Willpower to enter a challenge for which you lack the appropriate Ability. However, you lose all ties (regardless of Traits), and must spend a Willpower to retest.
