Jumpers
Show Jumping (Jumpers) is a sport of thrills and spills, exhilarating for
both competitor and spectator.  Show Jumping is not
subjective like Hunters or Equitation - Jumpers are based on
speed and precision.  Each pole or element knocked down will
cause 4 faults (jumping penalties) against that horse and rider.
Time is also important - for each second over the allowed
time a 1/4 of a fault is given (number of faults may vary
slightly).  Refusals also count as faults - 3 faults are given for
each refusal, and three refusals in one course mean immediate
elimination.
Faults

4 Faults = rail knocked down

3 Faults = refusal/runout

.25 Faults = each second over the time limit
Divisions

Jumpers consists of many different divisions, like Hunters and Equitation.  There are divisions, like Hunters, but no flat classes - strictly jumping.  Local shows offer more casual affairs for young or green horses and riders.  The heights of jumpers vary depending on the division and its criteria.  Olympic level competition is the pinnacle of the sport and the goal of many talented jumper riders.

Behind the Scenes

Jumpers must be well schooled and balanced in order to perform at the top levels.  The large fences, tight turns, and speed require a horse that is adjustable and listens well to its rider.  Many top jumper riders use dressage and lateral work to improve balance and adjustability while helping to prepare their horses.

Tack and Attire

Jumpers are allowed a more casual dress code, with hunt coats usually reserved for larger classes (but they are certainly not prohibited in small classes).  Boots are allowed on the horses, as are polo wraps and square saddle pads.  A certain number of accessories are also allowed, such as:  running martingales, elevator bits, gag bits, flash and figure-8 nosebands, etc.  Check rule books to assure you are not breaking any equipment rules.
