After nearly two years, over 40 gigs, and three guitarist changes, it was time for the guys to part ways. There were no apparent conflicts amongst band mates, just time constraints and serious futures to pursue. Some may argue that getting cancelled at Steve's Bar because they just weren't heavy enough might have been the reason for the break up. Others say it was the loss of two 'battle of the band' competitions to lesser acts. Or maybe it was the seven-person turnout over two gigs at the Blackhorse Bar that led them to the decision to call it quits. To tell you the truth, it was just the right time to let go.
In Winter 1997, Pat Minnick (Pyro) and Brad Nygaard (Smiler Grogin) met in Winona, MN, a small SE Minnesota river town, on the campus of Winona State University. They quickly discovered similar tastes in music, the love of experiemental jamming, and a unique chemistry. Shortly after, arrived guitarist Zach Greenwood, who brought along drummer Ryan Lodgaard. HD was born! Over the Spring of 1998, HUMAN DIET grooved parties, festivals, and two 'battle of the band' competitions. During that time they also entertained at The Blackhorse Bar and a local pool hall, called The Green Rail. Zach split town after the school year, but the guys reunited that summer for a gig on the campus of the University of Minnesota. In the Fall, Pat's old dorm buddy, Jay Rahman was called in for lead guitar and vocal duties. HD kept on at The Green Rail, which became Chicago Joe's (and now an adult XXX store), and even landed a semi-regular spot at Steve's Bar of Winona. Jay left for a job in Duluth that Winter, but introduced Jeff Meronek, who came on board and quickly learned the setlist. Jeff was debuted in the band at a house party that February. The band forged on, getting their foot into the door for some nights at Rascal's Bar, THE place to play in Winona. A few Winter acoustic gigs and a benefit later, and HD called it quits. The guys went in their own directions pursuing careers and schooling elsewhere. However, the spirit of HUMAN DIET lives on here (and at MySpace/HumanDiet) and in their many bootleg recordings that just radiate the joy of playing and entertaining. |
