George Scheigis was a gumdigger, and sold the Kauri Tree gum at his general store.

this is the area, in the Rangiputa vicinity, where he along with many Dalmatians (also known as Yugoslavs) gathered the gum (also known as "NZ  Amber").

Scheigis would send pieces of this amber to Lithuania in the 1920's as gifts for his family and my grandmother.

Murray & Sandra, the owners and operators of the lodge are very gracious hosts!

i happened to contact them via internet & they were very helpful in finding info. on my search for Uncle Jurgis land --- now their property!!!

here they stand symbolically with the Scheigis Rock in the background.  often they allow their guests to use their boats for fishing and scuba diving.
